I think the author of Hekate's Call has called the genre 'explicitly about the horrors of being a trans woman', for whatever that is worth. But I certainly see your point about WARPSRITE and whatever transness is present being only tertiary to the main plot.

The male character is indeed in the movie, but SPOILERS is the MC's brother. There is a joke about him marrying Kaguya as part of a challenge/competition, but he's never serious about it.

I definitely agree that it's better on a re-read. I started it when only 5 acts were out and really wasn't sure what to think. I went did a re-read after the whole thing was out and between having an actual ending and having a better sense of where everything was going, I enjoyed it a lot more.
