Today, as Gaza continues to be stuck in a bloody limbo, we are turning our website over to Gaza and its people in an initiative we are calling βA Day for Gaza.β There will be no pieces published on our website today that do not come directly from Gaza.

Over an article saying that Mamdani will be raising minimum wage for grocery delivery apps in NYC someone comments with a facepalm emoji and says "So if you have ADHD and live in a food desert... you should just... starve. Got it."
Can't now find it but there's a classic old tweet which said something like "Every time we're on the verge of achieving class consciousness in America a CIA sleeper agent activates and, their eyes glowing red, they just tweet out "John Brown was a white saviour"" and I think about it often.
BREAKING: The two federal immigration agents who fired on Minneapolis protester Alex Pretti are identified in government records as Border Patrol agent Jesus Ochoa and Customs and Border Protection officer Raymundo Gutierrez.
It is now confirmed from multiple sources that ICE shot a legal observer dead on Portland in Minneapolis between 34th and 33rd street. The victim is dead
Mary Bassett's firing is about many things, but Palestine is among the most prominent. Public health doesn't need to just "muscle up," and join the #resistance, it also needs to confront anti-Palestinian racism and imperialism.
2. The NUH was revived around 2010, and has been growing since. Attend this People's Hearing tonight to hear some unflinching testimonies from people organizing on the frontline of the war on poor people in the US. bit.ly/PeoplesHearingNUH
The height of the activity of the National Union of the Homeless was during the housing takeovers in the 1990s - you can learn about them by watching the film Takeover (the PBS version - not the 2021 film by the same name featuring the also-awesome hospital takeovers by the Young Lords).

NEW: Google is hosting a CBP app that uses facial recognition to identify immigrants, and tell local cops whether to contact ICE about the person, while also removing apps designed to warn communities about ICE officials.
βGoogle wanted to βnot be evilβ back in the day. Well, they're evil now."
This is indeed so deliciously written.
Great thread, summarizing our work on J&J's Advac and the perils of what we term 'platform thinking'!
This is a neat paper β¬οΈ.

Read @cmorten.bsky.social's great thread for a walk through the work. I have more to say about how American pragmatism shapes our environments for thinking and studying; it's manifest in the story we tell here about public and private science. That made it all the more refreshing to work on this! 2/
Read our work in Social Science & Medicine on vectors, "platforms," and the political economy of vaccine development as it relates to J&J's adenoviral vector. Health research systems can be built to understand and solve public health problems, but that's not what we observed here unfortunately. 1/
Just published in Social Science & Medicine! Led by @sariahmed.bsky.social + @cmorten.bsky.social we interrogate how 'platform thinking' constrains not only pharma companies like J&J but also science more broadly.

Kieran Andrieu, a British Palestinian member of the Global Sumud Flotilla, now back in London, shares what happened when he and fellow activists were captured and imprisoned by Israel.
This is a very important empirical (!) study accounting for the mental health impact of genocide on health care workers in Gaza. Much respect to the researchers who conducted a survey under the hardest conditions, especially those in Gaza. These urgent testimonies warrant to be read and acted upon

Relevant data from an overlapping and larger sample collected with @msf.ca and the Palestinian MOH, which we didn't find during the latest revision. Reporting very high levels of stress, anxiety, and depression in mid to late 2024, nearly a year later. sciencepg.com/article/10.1...

I hope others will use the means at your disposal to break the ghastly silence which has been so pervasive throughout the medical community. #MedSky #PsychSky @madhupai.bsky.social @seyeabimbola.bsky.social @terezahendl.bsky.social @mbarber.bsky.social
The notion of "conflict and health" common in health services literature falls apart in the context of genocide. An attack on your person is different from an attack meant to, in Albanese's words, "ostentatiously" violate every aspect of Palestinian life and dignity.
Our work on the mental health of health workers in Gaza is now out in @plosglobalpublichealth.org. The findings are not surprising - health workers were being terrorized from the beginning of the genocide (data from December 2023- Jan 2024 peer review is slow).
