It's the middle of the night in Chicago. Reporters and electeds are trying to figure out why a US citizen was detained by CBP, why her phone was inside an ICE detention center tonight, and where she is now.
Also unclear what happened to the other five people she was detained with at O'Hare airport.

This seems to be a common reply to my thread, so I'll address it here. Basically, the argument is who cares if this is a misleading attack on Newsom, he's bad so if it hurts him it's fine.
And I think it's important to push back on misinformation so that when there are legitimate criticisms...

For ICE to build concentration camps quickly, they're leaning on this Dept. of War program
WEXMAC TITUS helps contractors bypass the traditionally lengthy government contract bidding process
NEW β An obscure Navy contractor program is making Trumpβs plans to quickly build out and supply immigrant concentration camps around the country a reality.
Here I explain WEXMAC TITUS, an acronym you need to understand:

ICE Is Grabbing Data From Schools and Abortion Clinics
An agency database WIRED obtained reveals widespread use of so-called 1509 summonses that experts say raises the specter of potential abuse.
Admin subpoenas are back in the spotlight. Worth remembering ICEs use of a similar tool: hundreds of thousands of warrantless βcustoms summonses,β often for non-customs cases sent for info about journalists, students, and abortion clinics, with no oversight.

North Dakota AG orders abortion fund to remove links to medication companies from its website β’ North Dakota Monitor
The North Dakota Attorney Generalβs Office on Friday ordered a Fargo nonprofit to stop promoting certain abortion pill providers on its website.
Hoo boy, First Amendment watch: The North Dakota Attorney General sent a cease-and-desist letter to an abortion fund for simply linking to @plancpills.bsky.social. AG claims the link constitutes promoting and facilitating access to medicine without a prescription under the stateβs consumer fraud law

Trump's USDA is hiding the data on food stamp cuts
The agency's Food Insecurity Survey was pointless "liberal fodder," a spokesperson said.
SNAP now has work requirements for people 55 to 64. But because of the axing of a USDA food insecurity survey, we may not have comprehensive data of the effects of this barbaric change. My latest for @motherjones.com. www.motherjones.com/food/2026/01...

The Government asked this Court to stay the District Court's order. After the response and reply were filed, JUSTICE BARRETT referred the application to the Court. We directed the parties to file supplemental letter briefs on an issue that the District Court had addressed but the parties' initial briefs had not: the meaning of the term "regular forces" in Β§12406(3). In its supplemental brief, the Government argues that the term refers to civilian law enforcement officers, such as those employed by Immigration and Customs Enforcement or the Federal Protective Service.
Respondents, echoing the District Court, maintain that the term refers to the regular forces of the United States mili-tary.
We conclude that the term "regular forces" in Β§12406(3) likely refers to the regular forces of the United States mili-tary. This interpretation means that to call the Guard into active federal service under Β§12406(3), the President must be "unable" with the regular military "to execute the laws of the United States." Because the statute requires an assessment of the military's ability to execute the laws, it likely applies only where the military could legally execute the laws. Such circumstances are exceptional: Under the Posse Comitatus Act, the military is prohibited from "execut[ing] the laws" "except in cases and under circumstances expressly authorized by the Constitution or Act of Congress."
18 U. S. C. Β§1385. So before the President can federalize the Guard under Β§12406(3), he likely must have statutory or constitutional authority to execute the laws with the regular military and must be "unable" with those forces to perform that function.
NEW: By a 6-3 vote, the Supreme Court blocks Trumpβs deployment of the National Guard to Chicago to assist immigration agents. A majority holds that he likely lacks authority to do so. Thomas, Alito, and Gorsuch dissent. www.supremecourt.gov/opinions/25p...

What Do We Want?: Trump as Rock Bottom and Choosing a Better Future
This article is free for educational and organizing purposes, but Dispatches From A Collapsing State depends on your support.
Trump can be the rock-bottom of our vicious decline, but only if we start focusing on what we want the future to look like rather than what it is that we donβt want.
We deserve better than this, but we have to decide what better is and fight for it.
