I can't fucking believe we're doing this again.
It's nice to know that the Canadian government can re-discover the value of higher education. Perhaps less nice to note that it perceives the value as that of a prop for a PM's visit to another country.
See you in Daejeon.
Hurrah! A paper and workshop I submitted, and also a poster I'm named on but didn't submit, have been accepted!

Obviously I disagree strenuously with the conclusion of Einsteinβs founderβ that the purpose of higher education is for horses to learn to pull carriagesβbut props to @mjgault.bsky.social for a genuinely thoughtful piece and for being On It.
Thank you for attending Dr. Don Bakerβs retirement lecture held on January 30. Marking his 40-year milestone with UBC Asian Studies, he discussed the lives of three brothers β a renowned philosopher, a pioneer biologist, and a Catholic Martyr in ChosΕn Korea.

By the time they graduate, students need to learn to use AI actively and skeptically.
But intellectual independence has never been something you achieve alone. It means actively using an infrastructure of critical sources, and in the case of AI, disciplines still have to *build* the needed evals. +
Yup. The reality is that we're not far away from an agentic system proposing entirely new historiographical directions, but we will work on this quietly and present the findings in closed spaces with audience members driven primarily by intellectual curiosity.
I've been exploring something similar, but I no longer share my preliminary findings on social media because of a small number of academics who are more interested in dogpiling than exploring new research possibilities.
Really valuable piece. It opens up a set of questions about the potential effects of AI on science that I have not seen widely discussed. And without pretending to determine whether those effects will be net-good or net-bad, it explains why metascientific *judgment* may become more important.

Did you see what happened on my LinkedIn? RAG is apparently jargon, and I'm obviously Sam Altman's corporate shill. I didn't ask them where they stand on the political spectrum, but I have my suspicions.
Definitely need to snore to feel absolutely refreshed. π
