Gave a lecture on zoom to students in India. Across time zones it meant I lectured at 4am my time but I didn’t have permission to share my screen and my IT was unresponsive. I had to describe what was on each slide πŸ€¦β€β™‚οΈ

Turns out a lot of ICs have NOT funded any new R01's yet in FY2026:
FIC
NCCIH
NCI
NCIPC
NHLBI
NIAAA
NIAMS
NIBIB
NIEHS
NIGMS
NIMHD

these IC's have:
NEI
NHGRI
NIA
NIAID
NICHD
NIDA
NIDCD
NIDCR
NIDDK
NIMH
NINDS
NINR

The impact is already hitting science agencies hard. The NIHβ€”the world's largest public biomedical research funderβ€”has had to rely on leftover stopgap funds.

New grant awards have slowed to a trickle β€” exacerbating the effects of a record-long shutdown in October.

Yep, it lags a little. But still quite impressive considering that each "pixel" is a 150 MPixel multires image. Overall the total number of 'adressable' pixels in this 2D image are 225x225x150 Mpix = 7.6 Tera pixels. #ImageJ #Fiji #BigDataViewer

I'm not sure about that. I know council meetings took place in Dec for NHLBI, for example, and still there are no New R01. Councils for other ICs happened at similar times and some of them have funded new R01's

The New grant funding seems to be institute-specific because as of today NHLBI has not funded a single new R01 in FY26. Any idea why institutes aren’t operating consistently?

Cool time to start a science career. As a grad student in the early 2010’s I thought I was lucky because I didn’t have to worry about funding at the time and things would be better when I was trying to start my lab
