Before wiping us all out, remember Bryan Stevenson, Francesca Albanese, Noura Erakat, George Bizos, Thomas Erskine, Gerry Spence and so many others... there are still inspiring stories to tell: www.youtube.com/watch?v=Q8sD...
When I talk about more people turning out in spite of repression (or in response to it), people who've read a few articles about nonviolence say, "That's what happens! Violent efforts to repress nonviolent movements backfire!" But they often don't. It's special when people respond by showing up.
Reading people. Body language. Knowing how to connect with people totally unlike you and with different backgrounds and beliefs. Defusing tense situations. Gaining trust. High endurance, pain tolerance, and work ethic. Reaction time. Prioritizing order of execution. Anticipating people’s needs. Tons

Has anyone else downloaded the shark app?
Mine is going off every hour tonight… There are a lot of tagged sharks near the coast… and I have no idea if it’s always like this…

Just experienced the most intense tear gassing of my life by federal officers outside the ICE facility in Portland where marchers gathered. There was no fast exit as they indiscriminately threw loads of gas and flash bangs. Children were in the crowd screaming. @oregoncapitalchronicle.com
I just got tear gassed along with thousands of union members, many of whom had their families with them. Federal agents at the ICE facility tear gassed children. We must abolish ICE, DHS, and we must have prosecutions. I expect to see enforcement of our city code prohibiting the use of tear gas.
Today I saw ICE gas little white kids in the streets of Portland with chemical weapons. Imagine what they're doing to brown and black kids in the detention camps
Normal viewing has resumed! The #SundayShot is back...and we had a lot to cover. @emmashortis.bsky.social & Michael Bradley from @marquelawyers.com.au helped @davemilbo.bsky.social & I make sense of things, plus Dave interviews Nick Hanna.
Get back into it for 2026.

I was supposed to speak at a neighborhood assembly tomorrow, but I'm still sick and can't risk exposing my neighbors. So I wrote up my remarks and put them in my newsletter. Now, back to bed.
Don Lemon speaks outside of the courtroom after release: "I have spent my entire life covering the news. I will not stop now ... I will not be silenced."
Melissa McIntosh is more worried about kids singing about being locked up than kids being locked up.
We love you, Minneapolis!
Photos of Alex Pretti with Sara’s caption: On August 16th at approximately 10:00 pm I received a call from the ICU at the VA saying my Dad had sepsis and needed to be intubated to stay alive so Josh and I headed in. We were greeted by the kindest, most calming and warm soul who helped us understand what was happening and showed deep care for us and my Dad. He continued to show utmost patience and kindness over the next few days as my Dad remained in the ICU and we were there continually. It was Alex Pretti, the man shot today by ICE. If you see this video and don't think it's murder, I don't understand your thinking and ask you to question your heart. He was out there trying to help and protect and from the little we knew of him, it doesn't surprise me he was not afraid to be on the front lines of this horrible scene in our Minneapolis. Weeping for his family and all those at the VA who no longer get to work with him or receive his care.
My friend Sara posted this about the superb care her father received from with Alex Pretti
Absolutely heartbreaking
i dont know if it matters but jd vance and stephen miller are getting absolutely fried on X re: ICE and Minneapolis. Even on their heavily rigged propaganda social media network what they are doing is wildly wildly unpopular
My latest: How Renee Good's murder and paramilitary assaults on US cities reflect longstanding right-wing race war fantasies and Stephen Miller's fixation with a novel about white genocide. I also talk about the stories we tell and live in opposition to these narratives and share a must-reads list.
Just had a great talk with Huron Valley DSA about Read This When Things Fall Apart. Late last year, I invited folks to reach out if they were part of reading groups that wanted to discuss the book in 2026. Many did.
We didn't plan to talk at such a tragic moment, but I am grateful for the convo. ❤️
Alex Pretti from his early days working at the VA
Alex from our time working together, while he was in nursing school. Later, he moved to ICU, working as a nurse to support critically ill Veterans. He had such a great attitude. We’d chat between patients about trying to get in a mountain bike ride together. Will never happen now
When between being pepper sprayed, punched, and pistol whipped was he supposed to calmly provide them with a copy of his concealed carry permit?
For those asking, the #SundayShot returns on Sunday February 1. If you haven't already, get ready for 2026 by subscribing to our channel so you never miss an episode👇!

Wow -- Fanone coughs "go fuck yourself" to Trey Nehls as Nehls blames Capitol Police leadership for January 6
I am not exaggerating when I say ICE functions as a terrorist organization in the Twin Cities. The goal seems to be to harass and frighten people (the ones who are lucky enough to not be abducted, at least) and it's deeply unsettling when you learn they're in your neighborhood.
We are open: please wait for us to unlock the door. Thank you for your understanding
this is what it has come to for Mexican restaurants in the Twin Cities
Talked to a Somali man today who said his mosque last night was surrounded by neighbors ready to protect them against ICE if needed. Made me feel proud to live in this city.
You know those scenes in Star Wars, between the action parts… where people are working in fields, or having a meal…
That’s me right now. The Empire might be striking back, but I’ve spent the morning and afternoon out in storms, mending stuff, and now I am home, in cosy slippers, making a meal.
I write about the Adelaide Writers' Week debacle for @theshot.net.au.
theshot.net.au/uncategorize...
Gotta say, the cancellation of Adelaide Writers' Week gives me some hope for Australia's ability to navigate this.
A great loss for the literary community, but writers/thinkers/audiences aren't going to stand for the bullying and pressure.
Unclear when the politicians are going to figure it out.
