Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez doing what UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer has chosen not to do, criticise the US and Israel for their attack on Iran which breached international law

My essay on the first Haitian revolutionaries was published during the holidays. If you're interested in knowing more about the political differences between the protagonists who in 1791 launched the world's only truly succesfull slave rebellion, it’s here:

Some professional news: I'm now hiring two postdocs to be part of the research project I'm leading on global republicanism and the making of democratic cultures in the early 19th century. If you know someone for whom this may be relevant, don't hesitate to let them know.

A sharp new look at Jeannot Bullet and the early Haitian Revolution—far more complex than the usual “villain” narrative. A fascinating rethink of power, violence, and revolutionary vision in 1791. @nicolaivoneggers.bsky.social

Aside from the human consequences, this is a complete waste of ressources and makes our world a worse place. So, full solidarity with everyone trying to make it, hang on, and make ends meet.
Some have it better and some have it worse than me. But whatever the case too many talented, passionate, creative, and in every way brilliant people burn out.
For me, it’s been ten years of precarity and the new position also is not permanent (but it’s four years with good condition so I’m not complaining). I known what the consequences are in terms of mental health and the ability to have and maintain social relations.
Happy to report that I have taken up a position as associate professor at History at Aarhus University. Here, I will be leading a project on international republican movements.
Full solidarity with everyone out there trying to make it in this brutal job market of ours - academic or otherwise.

New book just arrived. Learning more about the rise of fascism to understand the present
Photo of the cover of Slagmark’s special issue on "The People, Democracy, and Populism." The cover contains an image of a crowd storming a palace. The picture is titled "The Storming of the Winter Palace" and is from a 1920 reenactment of the storming of the Winter Palace that occurred during the October Revolution in 1917 and was, from 1922 and onwards, presented as an image of the original events. It illustrates both the victory of popular sovereignty over medieval privilege and the virtual and performative aspects of the people and popular sovereignty so central to modern politics.
Slagmark #85: "The People, Democracy, and Populism," which I co-edited, is now available open access (tidsskrift.dk/slagmark/iss...).
It contains an introduction, 10 articles, and an enquete, exploring these three concepts, their historical development, and contemporary relevance. 1/7
Link nedenfor.

Tweet from Jason Hickel on Jan 6 2022 saying: "The climate crisis reveals that our civilization has never really been organized around science, contrary to the usual Enlightened narrative. It is organized around capital. Science is embraced when it serves the interests of capital, and is often ignored when it does not."
