Have you ever asked yourself, how insect brains represent places? And whether insects do have place cells? Then move to Germany this summer and start your PhD in my lab. We conduct tetrode recordings from bumblebees that freely forage laboratory mazes. π§ π#BeeSpace @erc.europa.eu @neuroethology.org
Unfolded and folded zines on a black table. Two pairs of folding them.
Zines at various stages of completeness on a white table. With a childrenβs book on the sand table - by coincidence.
Inspired by the amazing @sarahmackattack.bsky.social, the ABClab made their first zine. We had a great time. So probably first of many. #GuerrillaSciComm #SciComm
Norway Total medals per person: 41 Γ· 5.6 M β 7.3 medals per million people Gold medals per person: 18 Γ· 5.6 M β 3.2 golds per million people United States Total medals per person: 33 Γ· 349 M β 0.095 medals per million people Gold medals per person: 12 Γ· 349 M β 0.034 golds per million people Netherlands Total medals per person: 20 Γ· 18 M β 1.1 medals per million people Gold medals per person: 10 Γ· 18 M β 0.56 golds per million people Key Takeaways Norway far outperformed both the U.S. and the Netherlands on a per-capita basis β both for total medals and for gold medals β thanks to a relatively small population with a strong winter sports culture. The Netherlands also performs strongly per capita, especially in gold medals, due largely to its dominance in speed skating. The U.S. won more medals overall than the Netherlands, but its much larger population lowers the per-person medal figures significantly.
Apropos of nothing in particular.

These dogs are having the time of their lives following this week's historic blizzard in the Northeast. Please enjoy. 14/10 for all
It sucked for me too, but I would remember the time I had to take care of my grad school buddy, who had shingles in his EYEBALL! Oh, the misery.
So being sick-ish for a few days is worth it. Just get some extra sleep, you deserve it. Feel better soon!
Yeah, shingle shots are a doozy. So good idea to wait on the others.
Iβm so old now that I was leveled up to a pneumococcal vaccination. Thank you, Science!
My MMR titers were still quite high - did I get some special shots (=XP boosts) in the 70s in Europe?

#safe13 changed me and how I view science. And it thus changed also my field πͺ°πππͺ²π (Thanks, Kate, Katie, Julienne, and Robin!)
What we are now - 12 years later - learning from "the files" hurts - always will, but it is not a surprise.
If you liked this experiment, I published a full piece today in the same vein: a text that gets 100 years older with every section, from a modern blog post to a medieval chronicle.
It's a single story spanning 1000 years of English. See how far you get.

We rent in MSP. Rental company did send a letter - not to tell us that rent will be lowered but to let us know that maintenance calls would be suspended - their trusted workers not able to come to work bc too scared to leave house/family or (self)deported/kidnapped. π€·π»ββοΈ

The is a good place. And it should not be under occupation from our own government.
If my followers have been inspired by the fierce resistance the Twin Cities has put up to ICE, you should make it a point to take a trip here (April through October π¬), enjoy the wonderful things MN has to offer and support our small businesses. It continues to be a really tough time for them.

With the shuttering of the Walter Reed Biosystematics Unit last year by the US Army we are loosing a lot of expertise and future expertise in insect taxonomy and ecology.
Yup @weratedogs.com is pretty much only reason why Iβm still on social media. (Iβm now too scared to meaningfully engage with my science skeeters as I am an immigrant scientist mentoring immigrant students)
But I need dog content, even posts like this. 14/10
Also, tell your dog I said hi
this is beautiful
@markdavis79.bsky.social Any suggestions?

This Research Experiences for Undergraduates (REU) program is funded by the National Science Foundation to create "points of entry" for students interested in research. Students apply from across the country to spend 10 weeks in Bozeman, Montana this summer (May 26, 2026 - August 1, 2026). Admitted students are paired with a faculty mentor, who serves as an advisor for a student's summer project. Each student receives a stipend ($7000 for 10 wks). Travel compensation, room, and board are also provided. Our program leverages MSUβs unique microbiology expertise, focusing specifically on microbes living with little or no oxygen (like those in the hot springs of nearby Yellowstone). Low oxygen microbes are essential to human and ecosystem health. They influence (or control) such processes as the breakdown of food in the GI tract, removal of toxins from our bodies and the environment, and production of greenhouse gases. They are also models for understanding the origins of life on this planet, and the potential for life on other planets. A key goal of our program is to recruit students from schools with limited research infrastructure. Being in Montana, a state with a vibrant Native American community, we are particularly interested in applications from students at tribal colleges. However, ANYONE with an interest in microbiology - or biology/science in general - can and should apply. If willing and able, please share/tweet/spread the word far and wide. Applications are due February 14, 2026. Full details can be found through our website http://www.montana.edu/mbi/reu/
Friends, please help spread the word about our microbiology REU program at Montana State University.
