It was so interesting to discuss the impact of the new EU safe countries of origin list in Malta with @amphora.media @frowinrausis.bsky.social
Hier j'ai été interviewée par @lesoir.be a sujet de l'initiative européenne de relancer les retours des Afghans.
The EU has proposed letting member states drop ‘connection requirement’ from the ‘safe third country’ asylum concept
@gaiaromeo.bsky.social & @frowinrausis.bsky.social argue this marks a shift toward an ‘(un)safe fourth country’ approach that some have already - unsuccessfully - tried

Both surprised and not surprised to see 12 Israeli projects listed as beneficiaries of an advanced ERC grant. Not granting new grants to a country actively committing war crimes (and in doing so offering support and legitimizing it) seems like the lowest bar
My comments on the future of EU migration policy on @euronewsitalia.bsky.social
Nella diciannovesima puntata del talk show settimanale di Euronews si parla della politica migratoria dell'Unione europea, della situazione dei rifugiati ucraini e della crisi degli alloggi nell'Ue
#BrusselsMyLove
Yesterday I joined the Italian version of the talk show "Brussels, My Love?" on @euronews.com to discuss #EUmigrationpolicy, Ukrainian #refugees and #housing in Europe. Find us on Euronews this Saturday and Sunday every two hours, and on YouTube
Both as a migration scholar and activist, I strongly support the referendum to change the law on Italian citizenship. Vote YES to reduce the residency requirement from 10 to 5 years - a much more reasonable time. Italy belongs to those who choose it!
Who wins: far right parties and some dictators who will fill their pockets with the money of EU contributors. Who loses: some very unlucky migrants; EU citizens having their money thrown away without any democratic control; the EU's reputation as a promotor of human rights.
1. It seriously risks violating migrants' human rights. 2. The 'return hubs', if ever implemented, will not have any difference on the big numbers. It's just a symbolic measure, very expensive, poorly effective.
Instead of promoting integration - for the benefit of all of us as a society- the EU keeps fuelling hatred and criminalising migrants. This proposal is shameful for so many reasons.
The @ec.europa.eu published its proposal on Return Regulation
Overall, the Return regulation proposal severely limits procedural safeguards and restricts migrants' rights to appeal against the return decision and detention.
Yesterday I was on LN24 to comment on the migration policy of the new Belgian government. In short, a mix of xenophobic propaganda and worrying measures that will increase social insecurity #Arizona #DeWever #migrationpolicy
Overall, it’s either propaganda that will not meet its goals (points 1,2,3) or measures that will render our society more unjust and unsecure (points 4 and 5).
5. Cutting reception places for asylum seekers. Belgium has already been condemned by the ECtHR multiple times. Sheltering asylum seekers is not an act of kindness, it’s a duty under EU law.
4. Cutting social aid for refugees for the first 5 years. That’s how you create social insecurity, by preventing people from integrating into, and contributing to our society.
3. Externalising migrants’ detention in third countries. It’s legally dubious, crazy expensive and it won’t change anything on big numbers. It’s a purely symbolic plan, like the UK-Rwanda scheme and the Italy-Albania deal.
2. Doubling the places in migrant detention facilities to accelerate returns. Mass deportations are not possible because human rights protect people’s private life, and because countries of origin do not have an interest in cooperating. Not because there are not enough detention places.
1. Curbing arrivals by funding information campaigns in countries of origin; deterring potential migrants by adopting more restrictive policies and cutting social aid: it never worked, it’s not going to work now.
My comments on the migration program of the new Belgian government. Let’s have a look at the propositions #Arizona #DeWever. A thread:
