Not too good to be true, but definitely too early to victory-lap. The recent β€œuniversal” respiratory vaccine paper that’s getting attention is a mouse study, published in Science. It used an intranasal formulation that did not target one specific pathogen.

Logistics is complicated AF, but the current administration seems to spend more time complaining that Ukraine is taking our stuff rather than actually working on the logistics of replacing our inventory.

Maybe if Whiskey Pete spent a little less time on loyalty tests for promotion and complaining about β€œfat soldiers” and more time doing his actual job….

Read this whole thread:

But also I want to branch off of this. My division has started requiring LLM code reviews instead of a second human, and it LOOKS great to management "finding all these mistakes," but in practice it's a huge waste of time and money.

Sir, I will not stand for this Wile E. Coyote slander. He was a mis-understood technology innovator who simply lacked appropriate application of his technological gifting.
He clearly has more innovation and drive than our current president.

For a party that has historically freaked put about the federal government knowing too much about you (ie gun ownership) they seem really happy to hand over people’s data to the feds.

So in theory, a user based outside of the US could be used to attack the websites of US based companies or other companies based in Europe or Asia and make it look like it would be coming from the US.
Great job State Department on thinking this one through 🀣

I tried rewatching the first movie to see if time has mellowed my feelings about it.

I made it 20 minutes before needing to turn it off…

The Hobbit: Battle of Five Armies.
I was feeling positive that Peter Jackson was going to do something cool and that movie ended up being trash.

My spouse still makes fun of me for the ranting she had to endure after seeing it in the theater together.

The collapse of curiosity driven research has occurred in STEM too. Everything has to be outcomes focused - cure disease, grow better crops, etc. But so much of what humanity has discovered is from "basic" curiosity-driven science. I'm hugely in favor of funding curiosity in every discipline.

We have learned a lot about how to implement good cryptography API and see OpenSSL just go in the opposite direction hurts

I have been recommending pca/cryptography library to my Python users when they need to do x509 stuff and this podcast has strengthened that recommendation.

Also dang OpenSSL, where did it all go wrong?
