We @teamthomma.bsky.social look for a postdoc on The Secret Lives of Soil-Borne Fungal Pathogens: Spatiotemporal Dynamics of Intermicrobial Interactions in Soils (see project 4)
Thank you! Now on to more fungal work !
This work was funded by MiCRop - Microbial Imprinting for Crop Resilience and SPUN | Society for the Protection of Underground Networks at Vrije Universiteit Amsterdam (VU Amsterdam)
Much of this research is now published and available via my website www.thecrobe.com or on Google Scholar.
I am now a Postdoctoral Fellow at SPUN | Society for the Protection of Underground Networks where I am building on this research to understand how mycorrhizal fungi impact global ecosystems @spun.earth
I am deeply grateful to my reading and defense committee including @frantecol.bsky.social , @ciskaveen.bsky.social , @mrillig.bsky.social , Gerlinde De Deyn, @ehannula.bsky.social , and Joscha Beninde, and to my mentors and advisors @tobykiers.bsky.social , James Weedon, @vkokkoris.bsky.social
During this, I conducted a series of research chapters to bridge those scales. I combined robotics, microscopy, DNA sequencing, greenhouse and global field sampling, satellite data, and remote sensing. These diverse datasets were harmonized using machine learning, and advanced statistical modeling.
Most plants on Earth live in close association with soil microbes. These microbes supply plants with substantial amounts nutrients and play a major role in drawing carbon into soils. Because these relationships are so widespread, understanding their spatial distrobution is vital.
Soils are among the least explored ecosystems on Earth. At the same time, the soil microbiome has been described as one of the most complex ecosystems on the planet.
Last week, I successfully defended my PhD in evolutionary ecology titled "Mapping plantβmicrobe symbiosis across spatial scales."
ποΈ Survey of 10,462 people in 33 European countries shows unequal access to urban forests & parks. Younger people & women visit more, but travel time, poor links & few amenities limit use. This new paper calls for inclusive urban planning that serves all.

Excited to share that a chapter of my PhD is now out, just two weeks before my defense.
Our study shows that agricultural expansion into native forests and grasslands drives strong biodiversity loss in arbuscular mycorrhizal fungi across the Andes.

These results suggest that grid sizes should be optomized for the reserarcher's questions, and consider the resolution of underlying data.
This work was led by @peleg.bsky.social and Dennis Weaver.
Grids are common in spatial analyses but the effects of pixel size/ orientation are rarely tested.
In our new paper we tested ~400 grid sizes/orientations with heat and landcover data in NYC. Grid size, but not orientation impacts summary statistics.

I am interested in working with an artist on a graphic novel on soil and/ or global environmental change. The lab would have money to fund this.
Do you know of any graphic artists that would be interested?
