Fairy Tail, despite its exhaustive roster of regulars, is first and foremost Lucy's story. She propells it forward and events are centered around her vantage. She's our POV, our anchor of calibration. (3/3)
Imo, there is no story without both of them, Protagonist and Hero.
But when the chips are down, Natsu, despite openly and frequently being acknowledged as not the strongest of the guild, is the "Goku" everyone is always holding out for, he is the quintessential tide-turner. (2/3)
I love exploring the difference between a story's hero and protagonist.
For example, in Fairy Tail, Lucy is the story's protagonist but Natsu is the story's hero.
And this is not to say Lucy doesn't have amazing moments of saving people. (1/3)
L is the antagonist but he’s also the good guy.
Kira is the protagonist but he’s also the villain.

One last thing I will say because I'm obsessed with Death Note: Light Yagami? Yeah, no sympathies from me sorry. Man went a Dr. Faustus route and didn't do much critical reflection despite being a straight A student. And he is Death Note's protagonist! That being said, interesting and entertaining.
Modern discourse is like “Oh you like a villain character? You like that broken person who succumbed to darkness? Um, that’s problematic tho? =\”
Meanwhile classic literature is like “What if my protagonist was the worst person in the world? What if he’s literally Satan?”
