For #RockinTuesday this is a view of Garron Point near Stonehaven. This is the end of the visible section of the highland boundary fault, where it enters the North Sea.

I thought I'd join in with #RockinTuesday &
#TidesOutTuesday with an image I took years ago showing the Holy Isle and Whiting Bay on Arran. I think I recall that the ripples in the 'sand' are actually rock, which amazes me.

Geosites is a brilliant resource on the geology of Scotland from @scottishgeology.bsky.social. Navigate using the map to find sites of interest. Entries include summaries, screenshots and sometimes links to other resources such as excursion guides. geosites.scottishgeologytrust.org

As it's Burns Night, here's CM Hardie's 1893 painting, The Meeting of Robert Burns and Walter Scott which took place in Edinburgh in the winter of 1786-87. But who's the seated man on the right, pressing his fingertips together? It's geologist James Hutton who'll be 300 years old in June this year.

Peridotite from 700m up the side of Sgùrr Alasdair in the Black Cuillin of Skye. Someone went to a LOT of trouble to get this back to the truck. From NMS collection #thinsectionthursday

For #MineralMonday, the vanishingly rare and delightfully named* clinojimthomsponite. A very weird triple-chain silicate from Achmelvich, Sutherland.

*named for James Thompson, but there was already a thomsonite, so they called it jimthompsonite, and this is the monoclinic polymorph

➡️ So what happens next? ⬅️

The campaign is officially over, but this project is staying open, meaning we can continue to receive donations - we just can’t offer rewards. www.crowdfunder.co.uk/p/siccar-point

We’ll be in touch with updates as the project progresses.

When we add in gift-aid and direct donations, we have raised over £86,500, not including an additional £72k from a community fund.

The overall budget and design plans are currently being finalised, but we already know that we have raised enough money to fulfil our vision!

Modern interpretations agree with Hutton for the formation of Salisbury Crags (layer 8), but we now understand the higher layers are older rocks that are part of the Arthur’s Seat volcano

The bottom of the sketch imagines what the rocks look like below ground, with bands of light-shaded grey and red rock dipping to the left; the grey rocks are labelled “whinstone” and are connected by dykes cutting across the red strata.

This stunning sketch of Arthur’s Seat, by John Clerk of Eldin, illustrates how underlying geology can shape the landscape and shows James Hutton’s understanding of igneous rocks formed by the injection of magma into existing strata.
