How do you make cosplay sustainable for yourself?

It kept my shoulders warm, and has made it easier to re-wear this cosplay to even more cons!
This is a small example of self-care, but when we're comfortable in our cosplays we want to wear them more often, and are less likely to throw them away. β¬οΈ
This might be a weird take, but I think self-care is an important part of being Eco-friendly.
Let's use my Ewok #cosplay as an example. I wanted to wear it, with all of its fuzzy bra silliness, to an early spring con. I knew I would be chilly, so I made a shawl that fit the vibe of the cosplay. β¬οΈ
"my main white cape in the video was upcycled using old wedding dresses. And we also used deadstock fabric for the dancerβs clothes. That's fabric that's been in warehouses for long periods of time. And we also use pieces from my archive; so old costumes are reinterpreted..."

Omg Lady Gaga up-cycled her own wardrobe for the Abracadabra music video???
I mean among other environmental sustainable things. But that's so neat!
Reference below β¬οΈ
So I finally watched the Abracadabra music video and that primal scream in the middle must've hit something in me because why am I crying?
A Black woman in Carnival features on a black background with orange around it. The words "Meet the creator of #28daysofBlackCosplay Chaka Cumberbatch" are above her picture.
This #BlackHistoryMonth I had the incredible honor of interviewing the founder of #28DaysOfBlackCosplay to celebrate the 10-year anniversary of the movement:

This week's A Week in Progress blog is up!
Can Takoyaki convince you to read it?

π§΅/3 As #cosplayers we are SO GOOD at thinking outside of the box. I love seeing that energy applied to sustainable practices, too π
π§΅/2 And I'll be using stuff already in my stash: fabric dye, worbla, paint, wires, headband, etc.
ANYTHING you can do, big or small, to add a sustainable practice to your crafting makes you a part of the solution.
π§΅1/3 My current big #cosplay build will be mostly second hand materials or stuff I already had in my stash.
Fabric sources: estate sale, pants that didn't fit me, FB marketplace destash sale.
I have also purchased new materials for this cosplay: wigs, nylon glove, decorative cording, etc.
It's true. Only the strongest can live this way π
Me: "I can't crochet under these conditions!"
The conditions: my dog using my project as a pillow
An example of what types of things I write about in the photo below.
For now it's a "I'm using myself as an example" type of blog. But I'm going to keep expanding it, so it can be a resource, too.
I think this is one of the most important things I've read in the last 24 hours.
"Do the next right thing. Don't try to do all of your activism all at once. Focus on your specialty."
My blog is, at its core, anti-capitalist. It's worth it to keep going.
A month is not uncommon for me... Occasionally I'll go a couple months π
This is all I am acknowledging today
It is MLK Day
Somehow I missed the memo on Feeds for this app, and now I'm happily scrolling through only mutuals' accounts and I might switch to cat pictures in a minute.

I'm watching a calm aesthetic ball gown making video on YouTube.
It would be a relaxing experience if my dog didn't think scissors sounded like barking π₯²
Oh wait I'm already making Fearne π I need 2 new fluffy dress cosplays then, because I want a comfy one, too
I keep seeing fluffy ball gown content and I might need to make another fluffy dress cosplay.
Glad I found you here!
im gonna be so serious if you're cosplaying harry potter in the year 2025 i am just going to assume you're transphobic and want to broadcast that.
It is done! A Week in Progress January 8th - 15th
What do fish have to do with cosplay or crafting? You're just going to have to read it π€·

My goal is to make being "eco-friendly" feel attainable, and give cosplayers ideas on how to be sustainable in a way that feels good (we don't do guilt or green washing around here).

Hey there! I'm Dewfeathers, cosplayer and environmentalist with a Master's Degree in biology.
Sustainability in cosplay is my passion and I love to talk about it. I have been running my Reduce, Reuse, ReCosplay panel since 2020 and started my blog on the topic in 2022.
