👩‍🎨 Family Print Club - March Monoprinting

In April 2011 Ruth Ewan worked with young people from Broughton High School to design a font. The letters were originally drawn onto rubbers, one by each member of the class. The designs were then cut into maple woodblocks using a CNC router.

In her autobiography 'No Sae Lang Syne', activist, writer, poet, and song-writer Mary Brooksbank (1897-1978) quotes from Lewis Grassic Gibbons’ 1932 novel Sunset Song; ‘let us believe that the new oppressions and foolish greeds are no more than mists that pass’.

Mist (Lewis & Mary) was commissioned by Edinburgh Printmakers in 2011 for ‘The Writing on Your Wall’, an exhibition looking at printmaking as a socially concerned, democratic media designed to disseminate radical ideas.

This was one of the first screenprints to be printed at Edinburgh Printmakers using a water-based ink, which is ideal for creating soft, subtle, painterly effects.

The herb Viola is shown as a key feature, Healing properties are cherished over the ages, expressed by pairing the image of the contemporary woman on the right with an early saint holding a chalice (quoted from a painting by Sebastiano del Pionibo, 1509, now in the Academia, Venice).

Victoria Crowe has been described as “one of the most vital and original figurative painters at work in Scotland”. Her work is represented in a large number of public and private collections and she was awarded an OBE for services to art.

The print is concerned with healing, care and treatment.
