I need everyone whose response to yesterday's animation news was "Just go indie!" to understand two things.

1.) "Work For Hire" means the company owns what you've created. You have no rights to it unless explicitly stated in the contract.

2.) Going indie does not pay the bills.

And this, my friends, is how you learned that I’m a big Formula 1 racing fan.

I’m sure we’ll get used to the F1 TV broadcast team, since that’s what Apple TV is giving us, but aside from Crofty, I’m going to miss Ted Kravitz in the pit lane and Martin Brundle’s color commentary and cringey grid walk.

What I’ve surmised here is that F1 produces the camera feeds, graphics and data for the broadcasts, and Sky Sports must just put their own commentators on a feed over the top of what F1 supplies.

I have to say, I’m disappointed that Apple TV’s F1 broadcast doesn’t include the Sky Sports F1 crew. Going to be weird—and potentially sucky—to not hear David Croft calling the races. He’s one of the all-time great sports announcers and we got used to him on ESPN, which carried Sky’s F1 broadcast.
