More hedgehogs. These two big lads are evidently getting territorial ahead of potential mating opportunities. #TinyJoys
The vessel is cup shaped with a slightly rounded base. It's rough in texture with no decoration. It's a natural buff colour with some darker patches around the top and down part of the side, caused by the firing process. The marks where the straw inclusions were cover most of the surface. Extra info for the photo: The vessel is several thousand years old and measures only 8 cm. I photographed it for the Garstang Museum of Archaeology's 'Before Egypt' exhibition back in 2019.
πΊA tiny (8 cm) pot found during John Garstang's excavations at the ancient site of Koshtamna in Sudan, seemingly plain until you realise all those marks in the surface were made by straw inclusions in the clay. It's details like that that make me happy ...

Also struck once again how this version of the REF is much less career-impactful for ECRs than the version of the REF that I just about ended up being part of in 2014 in terms of trying to take an institutional snapshot rather than playing Rank A Researcher - and yet, the discourse, she lags.
As in, there's a whole raft of administrative assessing work for Unit of Assessment leads (and supporting disciplinary reps) to do where I don't quite see the value added to the ultimate process, even though it will mean a certain level of thoroughness in working out what output goes in what box.
Looking at our place's draft REF Code of Practice and blimey, the whole thing has got a lot more complicated since the last round, hasn't it?
They destroy the argument that big tech should be given the countryβs creative output for free, and they lay out the case for maintaining and even strengthening existing copyright law to protect creatives from exploitation.

The House of Lords Digital & Communications Committee just published their report on AI, copyright & the creative industries, and their conclusions could not be clearer.

I still haven't seen it and I really need to do something about that just for... professional credibility? Or something?
Well that's it: Film Studies and Modern Languages programmes to close at Leicester Uni. Sad and wrong. Every day, the UK becomes a little less outward looking.

It does depend on how many of them are romantics at heart, from my experience.
Thus adding another coffee house to the classical reception club alongside Starbucks.
Excellent! Now, let's do gas.
Do click through to the article because, yes, we are already on the way to doing gas.
Zach Polanskiβs letters are starting to remind me of the absolutely take-no-prisoners political pamphlets you used to get people publishing, and I am here for it.
Hurrah!!!!
But we know that a different vision is possible - an asylum system rooted in compassion and dignity.
One where every person seeking safety in the UK is given a fair hearing and a chance to rebuild their lives.
We will continue to channel our anger into action and change! β

And for women, this harm will be disproportionate and profound.
Evidence from Denmark - on which these policies are modelled - is clear: women and children are trapped in insecurity, poverty, and fear.
Since similar reforms took hold, grants of settled status to women have nearly halved .

We've heard plans to:
β Make refugee status temporary to 30 months
β Remove financial & housing support from individuals
β Pay families up to Β£40k to leave the UK
β Link permanent settlement to economic contribution.
β Reform appeals to increase deportation, including families with children

βΌοΈ Today's speech by the Home Secretary marks the end of a week in which we've been drip-fed a series of hostile and cruel asylum policies.
Each one points in the same direction: further penalising and harming people who are simply seeking safety here.

Tonight I introduced my 17-y-o to The Court Jester - my first viewing of it in over 30 years - and I'm happy to report that it's still absolutely hilarious. :) There was a LOT of laughing from both of us!

#TinyJoys Being reminded of #WorldBookDay by some other social media when my offspring was 12 and went out as a hobbit with a wooden sword. He's 23 now.
On the way down to church this morning, I walked past a bush in a front garden and as I did so a large number of goldfinches erupted out of it and flew in all directions. I'm sorry I disturbed them, but oh, what a burst of colour and joy!

Oh, I do hope you get some excellent proposals.
