Great paper by Bettariga et al on periodisation & how we might use this concept to best design exercise strategies alongside cancer treatments πŸ‘ŒπŸΌ

Strength & Conditioning principles are helpful for all types of populations, not just athletes

Thanks for your comment 😊 Yep, can be a little difficult to get your head around, especially if you don’t have visuals of the force-time curve

RFD vs Strength
I thought it was time to revisit this topic after yesterday’s publication.

πŸ‘‰πŸΌWhat these performance qualities are
πŸ‘‰πŸΌHow they differ
πŸ‘‰πŸΌHow to think about focussing rehab/training

The paper is concerned with the review of RFD / RTD (rate of force development / rate of torque development), which describes the gradient of the force-time curve i.e. how quickly muscle force can be produced, NOT the max for produces, which is muscle strength.

This is disappointing 🀨

RFD / RTD is not muscle strength. They are separate qualities of muscle performance

Had an absolute blast of a day with these awesome physios filming hip strength testing using #dynamometry, exploring what’s possible, repeatable & can be standardised in clinic just using a plinth.

Some tension & compression dynamometer options.

All videos feature in my course

I’m often asked which dynamometer to buy & about testing in rehab.
1st response -what data do you want to obtain?
2nd- why do you want it?

Do you want to use data in decision making, or as a motivational aid?

Answer this THEN we can consider which tool πŸ‘πŸ»

A muscle’s contractile history influences its subsequent performance.

Doesn’t always have to be negative. We can use potentiating mechanisms in clinical practice to overcome inhibition, or augment RFD & Power-based rehabπŸ‘πŸ»

These types of statements, in published papers really really annoy me 😑

Reader led to believe that break tests are associated with ⬆️ risks of injuries & these papers evidence it

They don’t !

β€˜Throw away’ statements like this can have a profound impact. Authors & reviewers please do better

I teamed up with foot & ankle specialist @lizbayleyphysio.bsky.social to created 4 exercise programmes for Plantar Heel Pain. 3 are based on Osborne et al. (2023) where 18 experts devised exercises for PHP. The β€˜LiTHE’ programme is our own creation which fits more closely with S&C principles…

1000 Hz πŸ‘πŸ»πŸ‘πŸ»πŸ‘πŸ»
One of the fastest HHD sampling frequencies. Good enough to measure RFD (rate of force development)

ANSWER: 40Hz
Not fast enough for measurement of RFD (rate of force development)
