Feature Interview: Will distraction be our undoing?
Whenever we talk about misinformation, the state of democracy, or what new technology is doing to public debate, one book comes up over and over again even though it was written 40 years ago. Amusing ...
So how did the we get to where we are now? A lot of it was foreshadowed in "Amusing Ourselves to Death" by the incredibly prescient Neil Postman in 1985. My good and great pal Andy Postman just spoke to New Zealand Radio on what his father was warning us about.

Family seating on planes triggers tears, stress and social media rants
Airlines face criticism for separating families on flights, despite efforts to address the issue and implement family-friendly seating policies.
Thanks to @washingtonpost.com:
"'To me, it's ridiculous we're still talking about this a decade later,' said William McGee, senior fellow for aviation & travel @econliberties.bsky.social, who has advocated for fee-free family seating for more than 10 years."

In discussing DOD's sudden opposition to the ROTOR Act, let's recall this absolutely stunning interview with DOT Secretary Duffy in 2025, when he made it clear DOT & DOD don't even speak to each other, let alone hammer out policy. It's mind-blowing.

United's Frequent BUYer Program
Airlines say the quiet part out loud on loyalty: "Why would an airline do that? Because it is no longer primarily in the business of selling you transportation from Point A to Point B."
And I can recall being criticized for calling them pyramid schemes...

At Consumer Reports we filed a FOIA for DOT complaints on this issue a decade ago. And not once but TWICE Congress (both Houses/parties) told DOT to stop airlines from charging such fees. Yet the bullshit continues Secretary Duffy tells flyers to dress up. Talk about enshittification. Disgraceful.

Man Shares βUnpopular' Opinion About Airline Travel-Internet Has Thoughts
A blunt take on reclining seats exposes how little room economy flyers have.
William McGee, senior fellow @econliberties.bsky.social, noted legroom on major US carriers has declined by several inches over recent decades. He added they "just kept whittling it down until finally it got to the point where just about everybody noticed."

Want to skip the bot and talk to a human? It could cost you
A number of travel companies want you to pay extra to bypass the bot and talk to a human. The Travel Troubleshooter opines on why that's a terrible idea.
These extra charges could fall hardest on Americans with less access to tech.
βSmartphones, laptops and other electronic toys are beyond the financial reach of quite a few Americans,β @wjm-air.bsky.social says.
