This is a beautiful portrait from the inimitable @ricksteves.bsky.social of the people who are suffering in Iran, both under its theocracy and from our nation's warmongering.

My friend @ricksteves.bsky.social calls out MAGAโs lies and policies that are eroding democratic norms, including how federal budget choices are shifting wealth from working people to the rich.

Traveler/historian @ricksteves.bsky.social is concerned about what's going on in our country, and the possibility of losing our #Democracy. So am I. #Fascism #Authoritarianism www.youtube.com/watch?v=E20u...
If you search for โHolocaustโ in our Rick Steves Classroom Europe video library (classroom.ricksteves.com), youโll find a dozen clips that can be shared as a teaching tool at home or in the classroom. Please share this free resource with the parents and teachers in your life.
As the years go by and the last eyewitnesses to the Holocaust pass away, it's more important than ever to keep that tragic memory alive โ and to remember the stark lessons of what happens when a society gives power to hate and racism.
Enshrined on a Dachau memorial is a message from Hitler's victims: โForgive, but never forget.โ
I have an ethic that virtually every @ricksteveseurope.bsky.social tour through Germany includes a visit to a concentration camp memorial. When you travel thoughtfully, the impact changes you.
Today is International Holocaust Remembrance Day โ and with masked troops in our streets, law-abiding neighbors being disappeared, a president othering and dehumanizing entire communities in our country, and big mysterious prisons awaiting his scapegoats, history is speaking to all of us.
Get well soon!
Excellent account that is even more relevant today than when it was originally made.
Edmonds-based travel writer and TV host Rick Steves understands why some Americans may hesitate to travel these days. But according to Steves, it's more important than ever. @ricksteves.bsky.social

Beware of "pink slime" media. @a-rlnt.bsky.social covered the story about @ricksteves.bsky.social last month, & this story about "Rick Steves" came up. Many readers pointed out that is NOT Rick nor is that building the hygiene center.
Story by Jamie Holter.

A more detailed account of the purchase by @ricksteves.bsky.social of a neighborhood hygiene center, his plans to help improve it further, and him calling out a failure to support vulnerable people. What a mensch. Be Rick.

Agreed!
Steves purchased the property to prevent it from closing. Many homeless people had come to depend on the Lynnwood Hygiene Center, which had operated rent-free on the property since 2020. n.pr/3MKbmJH
Excited to see @ricksteves.bsky.social supporting my local PBS station. Looking forward to trying some wine as well!

This is my Christmas gift to my homeless neighbors, to the volunteers who get great joy from helping themโฆand, yes, to myself. Merry Christmas to all!

And my neighbors who are cold, wet, hungry, and overwhelmedโฆare now happy that their humble little refuge โ where love gets traction, and prayers are answered โ will stay in business.

And now, I get to partner with the wonderful network of volunteers and caring people who run the Lynnwood Hygiene Center. And โ thanks to $400K in community donations โ there is funding to develop the center through capital improvements.

So, I purchased the center and the land it sits on โ the best $2 million I can imagine spending.

It's an invisible needโฆ an invisible centerโฆ helping invisible people. Meanwhile, Iโm haunted by the invisible impact of the insatiable greed thatโs so widespread (and sadly, celebrated) in our multi-millionaire and billionaire class.

And tragically, once a center like this is gone, itโs hard to imagine it popping up somewhere else in these NIMBY times.

For an entire community of my down-and-out neighbors, this hygiene center is the only place to take a shower, wash clothes, repair a bike, or get a sweater, blanket, or hot mealโฆwhile also enjoying a little bit of community.
