Rent without representation?! What on earth is going on here...
So many children who will never get their childhood back. A national disgrace that keeps getting worse.
Where rents are too high, homelessness follows.
BREAKING 🚨 Generation Rent slams Reform UK plans to scrap hard-won protections for renters. Our Chief Executive, @bentwomeyuk.bsky.social, reacts👇
It is disgraceful to see Reform UK pledging to roll back new and essential protections that would improve the quality of renters' homes and help us to stay in them for longer.
This would be a gift to unscrupulous landlords.

Really important journalism (thanks Jim!). Tenants affected in Merton and Croydon; landlord is supposedly going to make the homes available as temporary accommodation, theoretically housing evicted tenants at higher prices, borne by the council.
Thanks for sharing Brian, and for your fantastic support as a funder!
What do campaigners need from funders? www.alliancemagazine.org/blog/what-do... << grateful to @bentwomeyuk.bsky.social for his kind words about @oak-foundation.bsky.social's support for Generation Rent. We love making core suppport grants - and we see the difference it makes every day.

I felt a little nervous writing this article. There is not a penny donated to our cause that isn't valued, but I wanted to be honest about what campaigners need from funders in order to make the most impact.
I ask: trust us, join us, and fund us to last.

Solid advice (as always) from our friends at @sheltercharity.bsky.social 👇
Holiday lets are pricing locals out of their own communities.
The Government must give councils the powers they need to license and limit them, now. Without action, tourism will keep taking homes.

🏘️ ‘High rents and rising mortgage costs are hitting families hard'
Around 4 in 10 renters are in poverty once housing costs are taken into account, Lead Analyst @jelliott94.bsky.social explains.
Shocking new data from JRF shows that unaffordable rents are pushing 2 MILLION private renters below the poverty line.
The Government can and must do more to tackle the cost of renting crisis.
"What advice can I give to anyone staring down the barrel at £1,500 pcm for a cupboard?"
Homes are the foundations of our lives. But as @edcmpbl.bsky.social writes, high rents leave many people with nowhere to turn when looking for a home

“We’re in disbelief.”
Earlier this week, the Government announced that renters would be waiting a DECADE for decent homes.
Listen to our Chief Executive, @bentwomeyuk.bsky.social, react on BBC 4’s Today Programme
Interview with @matthewpennycookmp.bsky.social in the FT - tldr (for me) is current version of private housebuilding sector won't build enough to meet need; forthcoming strategy ("coming weeks") will set out how SMEs, councils, build to rent and the state will diversify it www.ft.com/content/9dae...
This is both true, but also unlikely to be an issue. For instance, there are many thousands of existing statutory periodic tenancies that would already fall foul of the SDLT provisions. But HMRC has shown no interest. Pretty confident there will be a fix before RRA periodics are caught.
Letting landlords stall on basic standards for years is indefensible.
It condemns millions of renters, including children, to unsafe, poor-quality homes while those responsible face little consequence.

M. Brouardel, 1885 'A recalcitrant landlord […] may refuse any repair of his building [… and] can drag things on for several years [... Landlords] therefore have every interest, financially, to leave things as they are and to mock the [housing inspectors] which are scrambling in vain against [them]'
It is absurd to let landlords drag their feet for an entire decade, denying renters the most basic standards in our homes.
It will mean millions of renters, including children, trapped in poor-quality homes with nowhere to turn.

🚨🚨BREAKING 🚨🚨
The government has today announced that many private renters will have to wait a DECADE before their landlords will be forced to make sure their home is decent.

London has become wildly expensive. People in the city are struggling to pay for our most basic need, our homes.
Our Chief Executive @bentwomeyuk.bsky.social
spoke to the @londonassembly.bsky.social about rent controls in the city.
Watch for more👇
On 1 May key parts of the Renters' Rights Act come into force.
The end of section 21 will be too late to protect renters like Amanda and Stuart from eviction - though it should give them more security in their next home.
We spoke to BBC East Midlands about the new legislation👇
