Dahlia seeds in promix (since I ran out of Jiffy seed starting, with vermiculite on top). Seeds from MIGardner, an AMERICAN company doing the right thing for their community
Fuck this fucking regime.
Americans, fucking DO something.
I know, I get it. Beat down by decades of inequality and barriers to education...
But fuck that fucking pedophile wearing his branded hat at the soldier's return home, over an operation he started
This is your president!!!?? REALLY!!??
No one is coming to save you.
You collectively chose this; you collectively need to figure your shit out and end it. The rest of the world is turning away. You think things are bad now?
Join your community, find the people who've been resisting for more than a decade now. DO what you can.
There has to be a last straw.
Starting the rest of the seed dahlias
I asked some local experts, and what I had learned before isn't true. If you start them early enough, you can get tubers from seed dahlias
None of them might be worth preserving, but for gardeners, hope springs eternal

I appreciate every US citizen who opposes what's going on and makes their voice heard (even if it's just by calling your senators)
It's been a lifetime of living above a crack house for me (as Robin Williams so eloquently put it). In one timeline, Al Gore was president, and I want to live there

More & more I'm wondering if I need to
I got so upset at people who would tell me "it's not your country, it's not your business" 10 years ago, as they clearly don't understand the role the US plays on an international level
But you know.... maybe it isn't my country, and not my problem to fix

They're either enoki or possibly seafood mushrooms, which are a type of enoki or similar too? IDK, I just treated mine from last week the same way at regular enoki ๐

Love oddbunch!!
But for the 3rd week in a row, they've included my substitution but also the thing I didn't want, so we have 3 melons, and we don't eat melons ๐
I'm trying to find a taker among friends, but all my friends also get OddBunch, so many melons...

Text from a post of someone I don't follow
"I passed my Garden test with a 94%. On my way to being (redacted location by crop) certified gardener and potentially a master gardener"
What experience are some of you having on here that leads to this??
I've met plenty of assholes on the internet in my life, but if I felt I needed to restrict who could reply to what is just good news to share & not at all controversial, I just wouldn't post it online
I don't understand ๐

Had to go search my own Bsky posts so I didn't have to grab my notes ๐
I planted both a Polystichum acrostichoides (Christmas fern) and Dryopteris marginalis (marginal wood fern) this past summer
A couple more months to see if they survived ๐ค
I love hostas, but these are natives

To be fair, I think "vibe citing" has always been part of academia ๐
It comes with just knowing something, then having to go find a reasonably close source to prove you didn't make it up

Photo of one of my seedling set ups
Very top is storage of random bits and bobs (there is SO much more gardening junk in my office than that!)
Then top to bottom left to right
Amaryllis, tray of pansies & celery, 3x hibuscus
Amaryllis, tray of onions (2 kinds), tray of leeks, 2 pots of coleous
Amaryllis, tray of hot & ornamental peppers
Olive Tree, Curry Leaf Tree, Bay Leaf Tree
... can't remember what bulbs are in the pot with the white gravel but they're just starting to poke up
All the bulbs on this rack are spent and just hanging out until they can go outside for summer to recharge their bulbs for next year
It is 10C here today, and while overcast, the sun has poked out a few times, but I'm sitting on my hands and not falling for the trickeries of false spring!!
Soon enough, my pretties, soon enough...
Like 2 more months ๐ญ

So nice of Hydro One to let me know today that my bill from 2 weeks ago was going to be $150 more than normal
Not like I have automatic payments turned on, so that was a really nasty surprise, again 2 WEEKS AGO๐คฆ

I started the dahlias from seed the same day as the zinnia, and wow they look good for being grown indoors and not even 2 weeks from seed ๐ฏ

Yes and no, the last ones I grabbed were off Amzn, and they were pricey
The feedstore near me has them really cheap, but they were out of season when I needed some ๐
Still cheaper than a little bottle of BT from the garden section

I just throw it on a baking sheet in a low oven for about an hour
It is annoying when working at volume but I got fungus gnats for the first time this year and that's much more annoying ๐ชฐ
They're almost all dead after lots of BT

I figured you knew enough to use them but even my hot peppers come up in days on the heat mats I have (cheapies from Amzn) not weeks
They take 9-14 days off the heat
Everyone's having trouble with soil quality these days, that must have been your issue ๐ค
I started sterilizing my soil in the oven

Extra suggestion, heat mats will cut your germination time right down, and will help with starting over again ๐
You're not gardening if you're not killing plants!

The white stuff is microrizal fungi, which are the good guys
You want to watch out for green (algae), which isn't an imminent threat, but can choke out seedlings

How old are the seeds?
It looks like your soil may be hydrophobic; I always pre-moisten soil before planting
The second option is dampening off (do the stems look like they're broken at the base?) which is caused by too much moisture
You should take humidity domes off once they're germinated

The wrapping is only to prevent cosmetic damage; needle drop is a normal part of their life cycle
I always add more info in the alt esp on garden posts, these 3 were "living christmas trees" if they don't make it, it's not the end of the world
They look better upclose, will post an update tomorrow

The half of the tray I've put the begonia tubers into is covered with the sawdust from the backage
They're a beautiful pastel mix that I really hope blooms as lovely as I think they will
Also started some Begonia tubers, which has left me with the problem of having half a tray that is empty, and I really don't want to start dahlias yet... but I have the space... maybe just a couple so I can get some cuttings going? ๐ซฃ

Dwarf Alberta Spruce that were sold as living Christmas trees, and I used as porch decorations this year
Bronzing (the browning) is a normal part of conifer life cycle, especially for young trees but this winter has also been incredibly cold and the holes they are in (still inside their parts) didn't get filled in with dirt like I wanted, just snow/ice
So we'll see how they do
They weren't a huge investment but I am excited to get them planted into the spots I have planned for them so I hope they live
I've been worried about these dwarf spruce, but now I can get a bit closer to them, I think they're actually going to be ok
The one in front is a bit questionable, but it's still green closer to the trunk & the lower section looks okay ๐ค
Will know more tomorrow when the snow is gone
