*Male Yuri fans. See, my autocorrect doesn't even want to acknowledge this distinction
It feels weird to try to classify make Yuri fans as a distinct thing, because Yuri fandom, particularly in the west, has always been pretty gender inclusive. There are various reasons for this but I will say that it's very funny to call male Yuri fans "princess boys" given where they often end up
That article is baffling. I'm among the oldest of the old school Yuri fans and the fandom it's describing is so alien to me. I had to look up Nana because I didn't even know what show they were talking about.
Something I wanted to do with this series is show how the feelings and lessons from the magical girl genre could be applied to adult life, without turning it into another grim 'n gritty deconstruction. I feel like I'm accomplishing that and I'm really proud of it.
Please do read them ๐ฅน

Title: "Unprepared for a Regrettable Luncheon! (With apologies to Kelly)" In the visual style of famed The Onion cartoonist Stan Kelly, Superintendent Chalmers is having lunch with Principal Skinner, who is menacingly placing a tray of hamburgers and fries upon the table, which greatly upsets Chalmers. Beneath one of the hamburgers is a wrapper bearing the text "Obviously grilled fast food". Chalmers [labelled as "Disappointed guests"]: "B-but... I thought we were having steamed CLAMS!!" Skinner [labelled as "Isometric exercising* odd fellows" - the asterisk refers to a footnote reading "Latest fad"]: "Oh, no, I made STEAMED HAMSโขยฎ! ยฉ1996 Skinner family All rights reserved" From within the clouds of smoke billowing from Skinner's kitchen (wherein an American flag can be seen burning) three heavenly beings gaze upon the scene disapprovingly: A pig labelled "Actual hams", Krusty the clown, labelled "Hard-working patent-holders", and a teenaged fry-cook labelled "Ignored sandwich artists". Lady Liberty peeks in the door and sheds a sad tear at this woeful scene. Kelly's obligatory artist cameo has him disgruntledly commenting "Seymour-a bore-e-malice."
Steamed Hams but it's a Kelly comic
(Yup that's right I still make "Steamed Hams but..." memes)

Man, Saga needs a pride parade, if only because then the writers of Zombie Land Saga would have to do an episode about it, and Ai and Junko might finally kiss
(Honestly they were one of the first prefectures to introduce civil partnerships so it really wouldn't be a stretch)

Sheridan: Yeah, so I wasn't actually confused about...
Sebastian, reading from Wikipedia: Jack the Ripper was an unidentified serial killer active in and around the impoverished Whitechapel district of London, England, in 1888
Sheridan: Around the time you disappeared from Earth there was a string of horrific murders in Victorian London
Sebastian: Yes. I paid for my crimes with eternal servitude, my name lost to history, remembered only... as Jack
Sheridan: Well yeah, I...
Sebastian: First name Jack. Last name The Ripper
Babylon 5: Simultaneously shockingly relevant sociopolitical commentary and a very obviously mid-90s show from the days before they invented subtlety
Some are pretty cool though, like how Azurill is "polka dot" because the Japanese term for polka dot is "mizutama" - "water ball", or a drop of water
There's also a second thing happening with Bidoof, where its Japanese description is "maru nezumi" - "round mouse", a recurring motif in Japanese art that I don't know much about, so I'm definitely missing some nuances. But yeah, a lot of these terms in the early gens are questionably translated
Most of the weird classifications are either Japanese puns, or terms that don't fully overlap. So "nezumi" is usually translated as "mouse", but it can also mean any type of rodent, so Pikachu, Rattata, Bidoof etc all get called "nezumi", which for some reason they keep translating as "mouse"
I genuinely can't imagine a less practical way of releasing the Gen I soundtrack than "Dedicated music player with individual cartridges for every track"
Watching the Pokemon Presents, and the Pokemon Company continue to be the masters of coming up with Elaborate Shit Nobody Asked For. On some level it's genuinely impressive
