Heading out of Houston after a very productive and enjoyable couple of days at the Rice Energy #HPC #AI Conference this week. Thanks to the committee for inviting me to the opening panel and for putting on a great event as always. Onwards to my next stop.

Blue sky and sunshine - haven’t seen much of that recently … nice location for some calls before I head to meetings.

Used the long flight to rearrange the app icons on my iPhone screen … so now I’ll spend all week not being able to find my apps quickly!

I used to visit Houston several times a year in my previous role but as far as I can remember this is my first visit to Houston since joining Microsoft 6 years ago - here for the always excellent #Rice #EnergyHPCAI conference

Don’t think Microsoft is running the GPUs at a loss …

There's a line between big bets using free cash flow and bailing out bad ideas. AI infra buildout as a big bet; as the MSFT leadership once said, the risk of under-investing now is higher than the risk of over-investing. But you typically don't want to sink _all_ your FCF into one bet!

Microsoft will have AI running on #MAIA200 and successors + more #Nvidia #GPUs + more #AMD GPUs + a few others things we aren’t talking about publicly yet.

Exciting times to be part of thinking, planning, delivering all this.

The exhibition is much much smaller, and the structured opportunities for informal networking (eg receptions) aren’t as many or vibrant, but those will grow if the event keeps growing.

At 2500 attendees, good spread of international attendance, lots of good talks/papers, can we argue that the combined #SCAsia + #HPCAsia is finally joining SC and ISC to form a “big three” annual event of #supercomputing instead of just the traditional “big two”?

I meant aura of moving quickly to secure targets before they had chance to look elsewhere for more money - Guehi was ready to sign with us in summer - maybe should have focused on getting him over line earlier in window.

But couldn’t know VVD/Konate form would drop so much.

Yes. Although sadly a season too late. And our #1 target now gone to our main rivals of recent years.

Not just on pitch we’ve lost our aura - no longer heralded for aura of excellence in player deals (in & out).

The biggest problem I think is not Slot but is Hughes’ bungled summer transfer window.

Investing so much cash and effort in Isak and failing to secure Guehi was a big miss.

Then big drop in form of VVD especially, plus Konate.

That put team and Slot in tough position for season.

My first time at #SCAsia/#HPCAsia this week. I don’t have a crazy preset agenda as I would at SC/ISC, so looking forward to having time to explore new experiences, hopes, and perspectives on #HPC and #AIinfra, meet people, etc.
