Introducing Frank Cichos, one of our invited speakers for ETAI 2025

Frank Cichos is a professor at Leipzig University, Vice Dean for Research in the Faculty of Physics and Earth System Sciences since 2019, and a board member of the Interfaculty Center for Bioactive Matter (b-ACTmatter) since 2021.

Fischer’s research explores AI-driven optical systems, including artificial olfaction using LED-based sensors, and energy-efficient optical computing for deep neural networks, achieving significant performance improvements.

Meet Peer Fischer who will take part in ETAI 2025.

Peer Fischer is a Professor of Experimental Physics at the Max Planck Institute and heads the Micro Nano and Molecular Systems Lab. He holds positions at Yonsei University, South Korea, and is a Fellow of the Royal Society of Chemistry.

He has been awarded the ERC Starting Grant 2024 for developing computing machines based on the optical polarization.

An experimental physicist expert in optics and photonics, his interests span from nonlinear waves to statistical physics.
Research in his lab focuses on spatial light modulation and polarization structured light for optical computing and complex systems.

Meet Dr. Davide Pierangeli who will take part in ETAI 2025

Davide Pierangeli is Associate Professor at the Department of Physics of Sapienza University of Rome and Senior Researcher at the Institute for Complex Systems of the National Research Council.

His research focuses on photonics, AI, and reducing computational complexity in convolution operations. He introduced a photonic joint transform correlator, reducing complexity from O(N4) to O(N2) for more efficient AI processing.

🔬 Meet our speaker for ETAI 2025 : Volker Sorger

Volker J. Sorger is the rhines endowed professor for semiconductor photonics at the University of Florida and director of business development at the Florida Semiconductor Institute.

In his talk, he explores how structured waveguides and complex media enable efficient optical computing. By engineering light propagation, his team develops new approaches to machine learning, showcasing scalable, energy-efficient photonic architectures.

Dr. Uğur Teğin, Assistant Professor at Koç University and PI of the Laboratory of Photonic Technologies, specializes in nonlinear optics, optical computing, and ultrafast imaging. He holds a PhD from EPFL and completed a postdoc at Caltech.

He will present Netcast, a photonic deep learning architecture that uses long-distance data transmission and low-power operations. Netcast achieves 98% MNIST accuracy over an 86-km fiber link with 0.5% error.

Ryan Hamerly, Senior Scientist at NTT Research, specializes in photonics. He earned his PhD in Applied Physics from Stanford in 2016 and has held postdoc positions at MIT and the National Institute of Informatics, focusing on quantum optics,and machine learning.

At ETAI 2025, he will present his work on a novel analog optical Ising machine (IM) using a spatial light modulator (SLM). This new approach tackles large optimization problems with high energy efficiency and fast convergence, offering exciting possibilities for AI and quantum computing !

🔬 Introducing Guy Van der Sande, one of our invited speakers for ETAI 2025.

Guy is an Associate Professor at Vrije Universiteit Brussel (VUB), leading the Neuromorphic Photonics Team. His research focuses on nonlinear dynamics, bio-inspired information processing, and optical Ising machines.

She’ll present scalable, room-temperature quantum computing during Emerging Topics in Artificial Intelligence 2025, focusing on quantum reservoir computing (QRC) using pulse-by-pulse quantum states and nonlinear interactions for advanced quantum networks and AI integration.

Meet our speaker for ETAI 2025 : Iris Paparelle.
Iris Paparelle, PhD student at Laboratoire Kastler Brossel and the Institute for Cross-Disciplinary Physics, explores quantum reservoir computing (QRC) using pulse-by-pulse quantum states and nonlinear interactions.

With a PhD from Heriot-Watt University and a Marie Curie postdoc at IFISC, his pioneering work on 3D optical neural networks has set new standards in AI hardware.

To wrap it up, here’s our fourth and final chair :

Aydogan Ozcan is the Chancellor’s Professor and Volgenau Chair at UCLA, an HHMI Professor, and a member of the NAE and NAI.
