It was a busy week for @radio-world.bsky.social.
From a hot-air balloon rescue atop an 1,100-foot FM tower in East Texas to the news of Canada shutting down its weather radio service this month, which stories were you checking out most?

Environment and Climate Change Canada has announced it will shut down the Weatheradio Canada service, as well as phone-based forecasts, March 16.
Citing rising costs to maintain the 162 MHz VHF weather radio transmitters, ECCC pointed to "more viable alternatives."

The Longview Fire Department provided us @radio-world.bsky.social with amazing drone footage.
This has been our experience as well. The bottom line is if you are running a publication and want an audience of people who actually read things, this is...basically the only option at the moment.
Reddit sort of works. It's great for driving traffic. But not really an overall substitute.

Cleveland is a cool place that I know well.
Might it be the best location in the U.S. for college radio?
WJCU(FM) Director Jasen Sokol thinks so. He talked to me @radio-world.bsky.social about the station's record-breaking radiothon, which raised over $100,000 this month.
I've usually not been the one to go up there, of course. But the folks who do antenna work are so hard to find. Maybe just a chimney sweeper...
The weight from the snow here in the Pine Barrens has my precious APS-13 antenna, which never had a problem with its chimney mount in more than 20 years, hanging perilously. 😱
Filed my story for @radio-world.bsky.social on the college radio happenings at the IBS Conference in New York City this weekend. 👇
Back in South Jersey before the Blizzard of '26 hits!
A packed ballroom of college students, faculty and advisors await the IBS Media awards to be revealed.
At the IBS college radio conference, from Villanova’s WXVU, Dr. Carol Weingarten, the inaugural director of the station’s partnership with Villanova Nursing and WXV&U Health Director, sophomore, Mitch Dalesio, present how they use credit-bearing independent studies for college station activities.

Our IBS 2026 keynote speaker is Helen Little of WLTW in New York.
She was the 1st African-Amercian female radio operations director. She was PD of New York's WWPR. But she opted to host middays at WLTW.
"You have to find out what motivates you," she said.
For Helen, it's the fun of it all.
It’s day two of the IBS College Radio conference, pre-blizzard edition!
Lance Venta of @radioinsight.com, Sean Ross @rossonradio.com and Pat Cerullo of Loud Radio PA discuss the state of the industry and radio’s DIY opportunities.
Intercollegiate Broadcasting Systems President Chris Thomas shared a couple minutes with me at IBS 2026.
IBS visitors will best know him as emcee of the show's award ceremonies.
There are around 850 students in attendance. Helen Little of WLTW(FM) will be Saturday's keynote speaker.

Mindy draws some oohs-and-aahs from the students in attendance as she describes notable tower sites across North America.
She is explaining the visual differences in FM, AM and TV broadcast antennas and is quizzing her subjects.
Mindy points out Dallas-Ft. Worth's Cedar Hill tower farm here.
New to #IBSNY2026 are its engineering-focused sessions. Love to see it!
They're led by Bud Williamson and Andy Gladding of SBE's Chapter 15.
Right now, Mindy Hoffman, engineer with Audacy and advisor for 90.3 WVPH(FM) at Rutgers is talking about troubleshooting station technical issues.
Scott reminds us on the slippery slope of individual social media account use.
What members of your station, including its DJs, produce, could end up being representative of your university, with one recent high-profile case at the University of Massachusetts at Lowell an example.
Our next session is an FCC-focused roundtable for college stations with Ed Perry of 95.9 WATD(FM), Allen Meyers and @fybush.com.
Despite the headlines, Fybush said his dealings with the FCC's Audio Division and Media Bureau have not changed.
"If anything, I am really getting quick responses."
Dr. Travis Bartosh of Chapman University offers how on his campus, faculty in the school's Computer Science department are looking to the Communications department to discover ways to unlock LLM-based prompting.
Our first session offers a roundtable for faculty. It includes Jodi Vale of of Five Towns College, Carol Weingarten of Villanova University and Al Levine of Nassau Community College.
How do you stay authentic?
The impact of AI in schools is the first topic for discussion. #IBSNY2026

The proposed Digital Networks Act by the EU Commission does include provisions to protect terrestrial radio in cars. I talked with members of the @ebu.ch and the Association of European Radios.
They gave me insight into their efforts to keep radio prominent and where the DNA might fall short.
Reminds me of my very first radio.
Was built like a tank. Seem to be plenty of them still around.
Came with these goofy headphones that would vibrate for like... extra bass feel? But they rsn thru batteries, so you could turn it off.
The 90s were a *time*
Microwave Power Products’ pending shutdown of the former Econco plant — known for rebuilding transmitter vacuum tubes — is a big deal for U.S. station operators.
In my @radio-world.bsky.social follow-up, Dave Morgan, whose WTAR(AM) in Hampton Roads uses a tube-type model, gave me great insight.
