๐ก The perception of mental health disorders is continually shaped by digital spaces. They should not be taken as mere anecdotes but an essential part of the larger picture into understanding psychopathology. 7/N
๐จ Neither diagnostic criteria nor online health communities give a holistic view of psychopathology. But together they offer complementary perspectives:
โข one shaped by clinical expertise & tradition
โข the other by lived experience & modern challenges 6/N
๐ Reddit vs Diagnostic Criteria
Only 6% of links are present in both networks, yet broader clusters partly align. Some results echo dimensional frameworks like HiTOP:
๐ Internalizing cluster: depression, anxiety & OCD
๐ Thought disorders cluster: psychosis, trauma & personality disorders 5/N
We also observe (with some caveats) that addiction recovery communities (alcohol, opioids, impulse-control) show negative ties ๐ซ to much of the network, which may reflect symptom-focused isolation & (selfโ)stigmatization despite known comorbidities.

๐ง Trauma, dissociation & avoidance emerge as central transdiagnostic hubs.
๐ก๏ธ Entire ICDโ10 categories: psychotic (F2), mood (F3) and personality disorders (F60) have fuzzy boundaries, linking more across than within categories.

๐ We built a network of psychopathology from co-posting across 114 mental health subreddits & 49 disorders, then compared it with the diagnostic criteria of ICDโ10.
In summary: Mental health disorders on Reddit are far more interconnected than diagnostic manuals suggest. ๐ธ๏ธ
