The UN Charter was drafted in 1945 by people who had learned the lessons that the aggression, isolationism and tariff barriers of the 20โs and 30โs had led the world into a conflagration. Article One makes it clear: threats of annexation are illegal. So are unilateral tariffs.

Interesting observation, Senator JD Vance. Historical context can be tricky - while some areas you are referring to resisted the Nazi party early on, others did not, or later became strongholds of the regime. Germanyโs history reminds us how important it is to challenge extremism in all its forms.
