Blows my mind every time I skip entire words
Man everyone did such a good job in Its Whats Inside I forget that these people didnt actually switch bodies
How are there this many people driving into yards to hit snowmen that people are making traps? Wtf is goin on?
We already had very high quality tools for that as well, they are called transpilers and compatibility shims.
I am serious when I say, LLMs will *never* do anything new. They are simply reproducing and rearranging sequences that are already in their training data.
Templates, libraries, and autocompleting code have already been here for less resources. If LLMs didnt make stuff up at such a high rate I would give them more credit butβ¦
I wouldn't call it genuinely revolutionary until something revolutionary gets made
I'm never gonna forgive yall for taking away all the silly fun videos on the internet. Now I have to scrutinize every damn thing to make sure its not some kind of slop. All the video based social media is sus. I can't scroll for my giggles anymore. I hate it so much.
We are gonna be endlessly tapping the "the benefits do NOT outweigh the costs" sign
I remember putting games on our TI-89's or whatever one we had and that was cool for a down moment but that did not have the distractive pull of a whole ass 3D game. If we didnt have so much "the kids cant read!" and no child left behind nonsense I wouldnt care but damn this does not bode well.
Explains my last gig. We didn't do a GODDAMN thing the whole time I was there, and just when it seemed like we would, BAM project scrapped or massive team turnover, find a new position on another project. Blew my mind
Okay so it was indeed pretty stupid giving the kids laptops in school because a good chunk are just playing games. Just full out Minecraft the whole time.
Cataloguing the decline into full Twitterdom but I can only take it in bursts. The funny and insightful stuff is getting increasingly rare outside of the 2AM insanity so its probably not long for this world. I dont post tho.
Omg I almost entirely forgot about this movie but the only thing I can remember is him in his Bicentennial Man old person makeup at his High School Graduation
"This is all a simulation anyway! With a powerful enough computer you can..."
My guy have you played video games at all? Do you know how they are MADE?
Yea at this point I am really starting to doubt that they read at all. If they do its with zero comprehension or just getting the synopsis off wikipedia and then posting about it. They repeat the same things about all of this to each other endlessly
Man I loved this book back in like 2011 because it sparked so much imagination for me about the stuff we could make up for fun scifi but the amount of people still thinking that shit is actually happening is insane.
Every time I see "universal function approximator" used because they think it means "can approximate what neurons do" I want to walk into the fuckin ocean and let the current take me
I love it when they try to talk about LLMs transforming medical/biology research they know nothing about, they just read some stupid blogspam somewhere.
CS folks need to stay in their goddamn lanes
It doesnt believe anything either. Its software autocomplete. Anything that has it responding like an independent entity with agency is ridiculous. We didnt do that with google search
First thing I'm grabbing in the zombie apocalypse
Stop extrapolating advances in computing to everything else, because that is simply not the case across the board.
Yea isn't that just because Copilot is ass too?
The constant over-extrapolating their "successes" onto every other industry that isn't nearly as deterministic as computer work is driving me insane. LLMs don't help anyone make actual material objects.
We have been trying, that is the point. The deeper we go the HARDER everything keeps getting, especially in biology. Which is the hardest limit to space travel, our chemistries literally start breaking down the further and longer we get from home. That cant be simply patched up.
I think I'm going to start bringing this up whenever I encounter "things are changing fast I'm getting so much done!" in the future.
There isn't enough material in the ENTIRE solar system to pull of some of these speculative feats. How the hell are we supposed to get it?
Thats not how it works! We have a highly advanced understanding of things and NOTHING for the last 60 years has overcome any of the laws or even hinted at it being possible. There is nothing to suggest the gaps we have will overcome them. All speculation requires unreachable amounts of mass/energy!
Flight gets abused in these comparisons all the time and its always so poorly understood. And of course we believed it could happen, all sorts of animals fly. Space travel is so wildly different it drives me nuts when people trivialize it.
We are too far away from everyone else. There will be no Generation Ships because in deep space where are you getting the raw material to build and repair things? How are you stopping at a planet to reup and then getting back out of the gravity well? Some things are simply not happening.
