We call it Sprucedale fen.
Looking across a snow-covered wetland with standing dead trees in the background.
I think I might love wetlands even more in the winter.
We also have stories and games:

Thousands of workers cut from the federal public service, including scientists, researchers, and entire programs across environmental, wildlife, and health fields. This is a devastating blow to science and monitoring across Canada, and will have far-reaching impacts. www.ctvnews.ca/ottawa/artic...
Huge congrats to the excellent bakers in my research team (their award-winning cake modelled after a bucket lysimeter is in the bottom right)! Delicious science communication!
Please share. Calling all bog lovers and peat aficionados - please drop a thumbs up or comment on this talk, and show TEDx why bogs are the best. My great hope is that we can drum up more bog champions in this world. With love and appreciation. www.youtube.com/watch?v=mWt9...

The joy of reclaiming the street! (The road as closed for construction at the time and he was gleefully yelling ban cars as he ran down the street)
Yes, this is how I do it too. E-intro among a group and then let them discuss privately from there. I want to student to hear from the current trainees and be sure the environment and my supervisory style is a good fit for them.
π£ Save the Date!
Youβre warmly invited by Line Rochefort, Maria Strack, and their teams to an upcoming event you wonβt want to miss.

So fun to be part of this project. Some research sites close to my heart included in this fun international collaboration. Thanks @wetlandresilienceresearchgroup.com for leading.
Screenshot from Forest Service USDA website with notice about the Government Shutdown. Text states "The Radical Left Democrats shut down the government. This government website will be updated periodically during the funding lapse for mission critical functions. President Trump has made it clear he wants to keep the government open and support those who feed, fuel, and clothe the American people."
Working on some paper revisions and encountered some interesting messaging on the USDA webpage. Some propaganda with your soils research...
First Nations asked the Doug Ford gov't for oversight measures over special economic zones (law-free areas for trusted proponents & designated projects). They asked for a public registry, an appeals process on cabinet decisions and time limits.
The government said no

There are peatland restoration studies in Canada published in academic literature that are over 30 years old, so does seem to miss a few things...
Excellent 10 days in Alberta collecting a whole load of CO2 and CH4 flux data, vegetation surveys and drone surveys at our burned peatland sites - super cool to see the vegetation recovery already.

ββ¦Canada π¨π¦ continues to lag behind other countries in R&D spending; it spent 1.8% of GDP on research in 2024, placing it sixth in the G7 industrialized nations and well below the 2.7% average among the 38 nations that are members of the OECD.β π§ͺ

COP15 of the Ramsar Convention starts today. Here in Canada we have the privilege of being home to a quarter of the world's remaining wetlands. Let's not forget what a treasure they are.

Since 1970, a total of 411.5 million hectares of natural wetlands have been lost globally. To restore & conserve the wetlands essential for achieving global biodiversity and climate goals, we face a financing gap estimated between $275 billion and $550 billion.
