and while we're here, maybe we should reconsider the wolf highway
i can never pick a fave, but my favorite thing ABOUT those plays is how they show that times change but people don't. we like stories of messy human drama, humor and heartbreak, sharp wordplay and simple truth. the human experience is about the balance of the beautiful, the terrible, and the joke
a great question that i can't fully answer bc so many smells are so good. experience so far suggests there are more good smells than bad ones! homemade focaccia right out of the oven is up there, sweet clover, great pho. fresh ground coffee is such a delight it converted me away from coffeeshops ha
people were always like "it's like tasting with your nose, sort of?" this made NO SENSE to me then but i get it now π
oh THAT TOO is FASCINATING, i find smell as a thing so interesting because of my years without it. the working theory in my case is that i have a mild form of a genetic disorder called kallman syndrome, but no one really knows for sure haha. my doctor was basically like "COOL π€·ββοΈ "
the degree to which i had to learn every non-olfactory indication of cooked vs burnt truly cannot be overstated
i would NEVER have guessed about eucalyptus?? both what it smells like or how much i like?? looking at that plant i would have guessed a very mild, faintly green sort of vibe. NO. PUNCH YOUR SINUSES IN THE FACE (POSITIVE). also i hate the taste of strong mint but i LOVE the smell??
having said that there are definitely some places in my early fics where i uhhhhh fudged it. loved a good "he smells like soap" because my theory was everyone must smell like soap at SOME point and why not imply good hygiene lmao
THIS IS WHAT'S TRUE. it takes a village and in my experience you need at least one person in that village to be able to smell π
Sorry I'm not more open-minded about LLMs, it's just some fucking maniacs shoveled out a bunch of useless bloatware featuring that technology, did not give me any chance to opt out, reorganized the entire economy around it, zeroed out gains made by green energy, and made it impossible to buy RAM
i had NO idea about so much! one of the wildest things has been understanding why people ask each other "do you smell that? what is that?" bc i imagined smell more straightforward than it is? like on some level i envisioned basically seeing a PICTURE?? of what you were smelling? It Is Not Like That
some things i have learned as a nearly 37yo whose sense of smell is about 8: fresh herbs and coffee both smell absurdly good; the insides of citrus fruits smell different from the outsides and that's BANANAS: cutting into a rotten apple can be one of the worst sensory experiences of your life
i was born with no sense of smell: didn't register even intense stuff like fresh skunk spray or rotten meat, once nearly fainted bc i was unknowingly in a room full of open cans of turpentine, like. NOTHING. then, unrelatedly, i started HRT. within a month of my first testosterone shot i could smell
This post is going around again so I will add this excellent resource: leavesubstack.com
When someone says βScientists do not want you to knowβ you can dismiss everything from there on. Scientists want you to know. They are desperate that you know. They canβt shut up about what they found out and want you to know.
absolutely agreed! and i think the one leads to the other regardless of which comes first. definitely not attempting in any way to dismiss the words of my personal hero terry pratchett here haha, just to expand on an idea i've carried with me for years with another possible path evil can spring from
terry pratchett said "evil begins when you begin to treat people as things." a strong case can be made for this. however, increasingly i believe evil begins when you begin to rate your fear of what MIGHT be as more important than the reality of what IS. so much harm flows from that poisoned well.
this garbage should be given the same weight as saying 'let's consider burning down people's homes bc there might be ghosts inside, and if there were, and i went in, i might be scared!' if you want to cause real harm based on hypothetical fears of hypothetical problems, YOU are in fact the problem
ME IN 2019, WATCHING THE GOOD PLACE: damn, how do you even think of something like "time moves in an inexplicable cycle that kinda looks like the words jeremy bearimy?" what a cool show
ME IN MARCH 2026: dear god, i truly hate it here in the dot of this i
i don't know what on earth we do about this, tho it sure does seem terrible! but one thing i know for certain is that if i, someone who has been Terminally Online for nearly twenty years, feel this way, then your average normal person cannot possibly have any goddamn idea what the hell is going on
yeah. speed & info density has been increasing steadily for years; what took like a year to evolve, spread & fade in 2015 took abt a day by 2025. but we've hit a new level. i was semi-offline for a week & like 3 decades have passed by 2015 standards, which were themselves too fast for many to track
link's t4t but the t stands for "trapped in the endless time cycle that is woven into the very foundation of the kingdom of hyrule"

The last fifty years of American politics (or more!) summed up by a mere two lines of dialogue.
someday this will be over, bc all that begins must end; bc what ground hatred takes it never holds; bc humanity's capacity for goodness always blazes brightest in the end. these are sickening times, but they do not have to make you sick. do not give up. do not give in. do not let go. do not forget.
the years i've lived i've lived afraid: of threats big & small, real & imagined. but i've loved more than i've feared. i have not let hatred make me small. if you are here, drawing breath, you have time: to love, to be brave. it will always be worth it, no matter the price. it's what we're made for.
hatred is the most pathetic form fear can take; they hate us because they fear us. it is not nothing to know yourself braver than these sick, sad cowards. every action you take in love--for yourself, for your neighbor, for your world--is an act of courage. they want you to forget this. do not.
