Really enjoyed @drachinifel.bsky.social Naval History Conference held on board HMS Belfast yesterday.
Thought provoking keynote speakers and topics.
Glad to have a catch up with @garius.bsky.social, sorry was feeling 100% but better travel plans for the next one.

A balance of ships is needed, however, large ships have exponentially more volume, which means multiple full spec sensor systems and multiple defence systems on all levels. A regular sized DD with a couple of CIWS is infinitely more vulnerable to drones than a large one with a dozen.
I mean, I think very large surface combatants are needed, haven't seen the specs on this thing though, it's all about load out and mission type.

It was the one looking at what if the US Fleet was waiting for Centre Force at Samar :)
I got there first by a few weeks 😀
Do you want the Home Fleet or also including the various ships in the Channel etc? And I suppose what size of ship, destroyers and larger would be much easier than all the MTB's etc 😀
What was the Italian naval strategy in the Mediterranean during World War Two? Here is explained, with the words of Admiral Giuseppe Fioravanzo

Wholeheartedly recommending @drachinifel.bsky.social's video on the Hungarian River Flottilla, probably the most thorough work in the English language
I believe you're referring to the USS Enterprise as the Battle of Santa Cruz
It's scheduled for tommorow evening, shouldn't have moved from that.
Given they managed to hear ice in experiments in the early 1910's, yes 😀
There would be the usual planning of sea routes and reports from other ships but in terms of onboard measures the ship could've had hydrophones or similar as early work in underwater acoustics was designed to detect icebergs after the loss of Titanic.
In 1939 incredibly few ships had radar, and what there was, was largely air search, with limited secondary surface search capacity. :)
Jane's is good, just remember it usually goes by launch date, as opposed to commission date. Obviously a certain percentage of a ship will be brass etc but as a starting point basic tonnage is a good rough guide.
Well, that can be estimated per year by using fleet lists, although it would be complicated by the presence of older partially or fully wooden ships. A tonnage of the main combatants, battleships, cruisers, destroyers etc would be easier to find.
Definitely, I paused it pending the release of a couple of new books, which have then had their release dates pushed back repeatedly!
A 'Fish' towed directional hydrophone array
Coming tommorow - A brief history on the development of ASDIC/Sonar along with some surprising adjacent developments. For example, here is what is effectively a directional passive towed array, in WW1!
A fair few, I'm hoping to do the next one this coming week, a series of cold/flu waves prevented me from doing any for the last few weeks
Without knowing the details the most likely scenario is navigating a congested shipping lane, it puts ships in close proximity and one wrong call can set a near unavoidable collision if not spotted in time. At that point, opening fire wouldn't help much, only making things worse.
Ironically he's actually faster at top speed than a Deutschland class 😀
A mostly mature deerhound and a red fox taken in the same position to illustrate size difference.
This is why Able Seaman Floppy is at least of heavy cruiser displacement. (UK urban fox for scale)
I've heard varying degrees of emphasis on the t depending usually on how 'French' the person is pronouncing the word.
I don't have it, but I could go look it up :)
Haven't yet, it's on the list of things to do. It's a fairly complicated time period!
I'd love to be a guest on your podcast, equally, if you want to come talk about the Kaiserlichemarine on my channel there's a welcome spot for you :)
These days minimum proce for CIWS entry should be a decent fragmentation round IMO, so 35/40mm
Yeah, I'm working with the NMRN for access.
Looking good in principle, speed of firing and recoil feels just a fraction fast?
