5 years in the making and with still some final tweaks, especially as we take input from league stakeholdersโฆ thank you to @johnhollinger.bsky.social (@nytimes.com and @theathletic.com) for writing about our idea to fix #tanking in the #NBA! Gift link below ๐
Thank you so much @ekoreen.bsky.social for taking the time to hear out the idea in an earlier stage. It is because of your comments this system was made better! You were so gracious.
Hi @maggieastor.bsky.social please take a look at the scientific discourse on the study at the center of your most recent @nytimes.com article. There are some serious issues with the analysis: www.science.org/doi/10.1126/...

Context influences DEI efforts and policy: before prescribing solutions, itโs important to measure baseline bias, as well-intended pressure can temporarily overshoot in already inclusive environments.
Later: the effect diminishes, returning to near-zero bias levels.
The clearest evidence appears with a continuous tone ๐จ๐ฎ๐ญ-๐ ๐ซ๐จ๐ฎ๐ฉ ๐๐๐ฏ๐จ๐ซ๐ข๐ญ๐ข๐ฌ๐ฆ difference. The findings align with out-group favoritism rather than in-group discrimination.

Baseline: As expected, ๐ง๐จ ๐ฌ๐ฒ๐ฌ๐ญ๐๐ฆ๐๐ญ๐ข๐ racial bias exists ๐๐๐๐จ๐ซ๐ heightened awareness.
After attention: ๐จ๐ฏ๐๐ซ๐๐จ๐ซ๐ซ๐๐๐ญ๐ข๐จ๐ง, where players receive ๐๐๐ฐ๐๐ซ fouls from crews of more โopposite-race/dissimilar-toneโ officials.
We examine the #WNBA, which is known for its clear stance against all forms of discrimination.
Using 11 seasons of data, quasi-random referee assignments, and Machine Learning to predict race and skin tone, we explore how increased public attention influences officiating.
Today, racial discrimination is illegal. This does not mean that racial discrimination has fully disappeared, but it is also plausible to assume that many (hopefully most) organizations have no ongoing systematic discrimination.
When Gary Becker published his seminal work on the economics of discrimination (1957), racial discrimination in the USA was still legal.

If AI and workers were strong complements, what would we see?, by @joshgans open.substack.com/pub/joshuaga... Does the latest data tell us AI is a substitute for human work? Nope. Is that comforting? Also nope. My comments on @erikbryn and co. (and @Noahpinion
By all indications, last years economics job market was much tougher than any year since the pandemic. But all signs point towards an even worse job market coming up this season.
Let me explain.
Students often overestimate job prospects in their dream fields. ๐
