Through the conversations we had, our project took away 7 key insights that are already inspiring our next steps.
I'd like to thank everyone who took the time to participate and who was curious to hear about our work and helped us with their input! I hope that our paths will cross again soon!
Additionally, reducing the influence of gender on educational choices can help students discover and develop talents they might not have otherwise explored.
Reducing the impact of gender on educational choices can help address labor shortages in areas like healthcare and engineering. It can also make these fields more innovative by bringing in a mix of perspectives and skills from different genders.
There are fewer men in fields like healthcare, early education, and domestic work (HEED), and fewer women in fields like science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM).
If boys mostly pick computer science and girls mostly pick educational science, that’s a gendered choice. On a larger scale, these choices lead to certain fields having more men or more women.
Gendered educational choices are decisions about education that align with stereotypes and expectations about how boys and girls should feel, think, and act. Choosing between an elective course in educational science or computer science can show gendered choices:
A big highlight of this year was having the chance to lead stakeholder roundtable meetings to discuss how we can reduce gendered educational choices. Thank you to all the lovely people I got to meet and learn from, and of course to the RE-WIRING project for making all of this possible.

Why do students’ career choices often follow gender stereotypes?👨🏽🔬👩🏻🏫 What’s been done to change this, and what’s next? Join me this Thursday at the ASPO conference in Groningen, where I’ll share actionable steps to reduce gendered career paths in the Gender Roles and Diversity session at RaboStudio!
This is so backward
1. Science is more than just commercialisable widgetry
2. Making progress on our biggest problems (climate change, infectious diseases, misinfo to name a few) will need more collaboration between STEM and hum/social sci not less.
Any Europeans hoping to do conferences or holidays without flying, Interrail have a 25% off sale on most passes until 17/12! This is how I managed to do conferences by rail cheaply last year, I'd highly recommend! It's not just for gap years! #AcademicSky www.myinterrail.co.uk/interrail-pa... #Env
Curious? Come find us Friday morning (June 14) in Room A022, we will start at 8:30. Feel free to reach out if you want to hear more about our work, I'd also love to chat over a coffee :)
Esmée will tell us how communications of ideal worker norms in HEED and STEM job vacancies can be a source of gender bias. Jenny will explain how self-group distancing can be an obstacle to gender diversity at workplaces with strong masculinity norms.
Kate will talk about why the gender gap in the care economy is larger in highly developed countries. Onur will present a longitudinal field experiment that tested an intervention to help expecting couples divide work and care.
You want to find out what gendered educational choices are and what causes them? You are interested in interventions and tools that might reduce them? You are curious to hear which interventions work best in which contexts? I will be happy to share my insights!
Excited about the upcoming G-Versity conference in Bern! My talk on #Gendered #Educational Choices is based on my work for RE-WIRING and will be part of the Pathways to Parity Symposium with Jenny Veldman, Onur Şahin, Kate Block, and Esmee Schregardus. Let me know if want to have a chat in Bern!

I hope that my research contributes to the social psychology of stereotyping by clarifying the role of verbal communication in stereotype maintenance and stereotype change.
Do people judge and understand "Men are brave" like "Men are braver than women"? Will "Men and women are equally brave" be more convincing than "Men are as brave as women"? I just submitted my dissertation that showed that comparative formats matter. #KULeuven
