If the U.S. had had a single-payer universal health care system in 2020, nearly 212,000 American lives would have been saved that year, according to a new study
ReminderβIf the U.S. had had a single-payer universal health care system in 2020, nearly 212,000 American lives would have been saved that year. In addition, the country would have saved $105 billion in COVID-19 hospitalization expenses alone.Β

If a new pandemic comes to the US next year weβll have an NIH director who advocated for letting COVID burn through the US, an HHS Sec who believes in raw milk but not vaccines, an FDA commissioner who said COVID would be over by 4/2021, and a CDC director who supported the debunked theory that vaccines cause autism.

Once upon a time the UK had rent control, and minimum prices for milk, eggs etc for farmers.
Then the billionaires took over and decided to let themselves rob us as much as they like.
Time to take back control.

FDA incentives are for farmers to not report. If sick animals are detected, they are sold for meat, and contaminate the meat supply. H5N1 milk detected must be dumped. FDA should buy the contaminated milk and cows and destroy them to protect the rest of the food supply and encourage reporting. #h5n1

Shrimp like animal with a large round front end and a curled shrimp like tail, floating in black midwater 1557m. Body covered in tiny spikes and is a combination of transparent and red.
My favorite jelly. The only part of the animal you can see here is the big maroon colored bell and satin looking curtain type appendages coming out of the bell. This animal was every bit of 6m or more
Ok, so think the Muppet Beaker, but if it was wet and bald. Extremely dark tube shaped fish with two ridiculously placed eyes right on the tip of the head, but it also has a really neat red parasitic copepod stuck just behind the head about 10cm down from the top of the head. The copepod kinda looks like one of those tags shak scientists use to track sharks, but this one eats you.
Vibrant red squid very close to the camera so that you primarily see the large black eyeball. A reflection from the ROV can be seen in the eye. The animal is facing tentacles down with them held together so that it looks more like one large tentacle rather than 7 small ones.
No SchmidtOcean dive today, so here's more screenshots from past expeditions. Amphipod, stygiomedusa, Pelican eel with parasitic copepod, & iirc the last one was Mastigoteuthis, but i could be wrong. #MarineLife

FTC Sues Private Equity Fund and U.S. Anesthesia Partners Over Alleged βRoll Upβ Acquisitions, οΏ½...
Part of the reason U.S. healthcare sucks is the dominance of private equity in physician staffing groups.
The FTC took action against Welsh Carson and U.S. Anasthesia Partners (USAP) for an anticompetitive scheme: price-setting arrangements between USAP and at least three of its competitors. π©Ί

In recent years, the field of neuroscience has gone through rapid experimental advances and a significant increase in the use of quantitative and computational methods. This growth has created a need ...
Curious to know if anyone has used our "Role of Theory and Modeling in Neuroscience" paper in a course? Have heard of it being used in a few grad courses, and all of a sudden that seems quite relevant as I write up job applications... π¬

The Bay Area Times's view: like SEC v. Ripple, these cases will take years to finalize, and its outcome is uncertain.
β’ These cases may go to the Supreme Court, whose current Republican majority might be torn between originalist anti-crypto arguments and pro-business pro-crypto arguments.

Needing to move is a huge barrier to broadening representation in the sciences
Science will be more inclusive and equitable when we stop expecting people to uproot their lives every few years
Imagine our profession was built so that you could advance your career without moving all the time. Isn't this a huge piece of the equity and access problem? Yes, it is.
