Santa says: tax oil and gas billionaires, fund our state
YouTube video by Fairbanks Climate Action Coalition
When @santaclausalaska.bsky.social says it’s time to close the S Corp tax loophole, you know it’s time to close the S Corp tax loophole.
Tell legislators: fund our state services, save the PFD, and make oil and gas corporations pay their fair share.

Renewable energy adoption and energy efficiency upgrades are a great path for the borough to take to reduce these costs.
Thank you to the borough assembly and administration for making this happen.

Borough debuts facilities energy dashboard
The Fairbanks North Star Borough administration provided a snapshot of a new tool that tracks the energy use of borough facilities during an Assembly Finance Commission meeting last week.
The Policy and Politics Working Group was ecstatic to see the introduction of the FNSB energy dashboard debuted last week. It’s clear to see, within the dashboard, that our reliance on fossil fuels over renewable energy is costing our borough and our taxpayers.

A similar pattern emerged in 2024, with oil and gas employment at 1 million juxtaposed against record-setting production. As seen in our chart of the quarter, over the past decade, the U.S. oil and gas industry has experienced a 20% drop in employment

Staffing peaked at 1.26 million in 2014, coinciding with sustained high crude oil prices and a boom in oil and gas employment during the early phases of the U.S. fracking boom. But a lower employment peak was reported in 2019 at 1.13 million, even though production levels were higher than in 2014.

Graph Description from the IEEFA:
The benefits derived from oil and gas employment wages within the U.S. economy are decaying. During the last two market-driven cycles, the oil and gas industry has experienced lower peaks for employment levels compared to the preceding highs.

This graph from the Institute for Energy Economics and Financial Analysis (IEEFA) shows the significant decrease in U.S. oil and gas employment in the last decade.
It makes sense to decrease tax breaks for oil companies when they are investing less in us. (graph description from IEEFA in comments)

Alaska's $44 billion bet on natural gas
No-bid deals, undisclosed contracts, and millions already spent: Inside the wild story of the Alaska gas pipeline that will not die.
This article lays out a helpful explanation of the current state of Alaska's controversial proposed LNG pipeline (which is expected to take up a LOT of legislators' time this session), including the history of the project, the current players, and the tenuous economics.

The "final decision" on the gasline has been almost here for over 50 years now. Meanwhile, billions have been spent not building a pipeline, and not bringing on any new energy. Don't we think it's about time to move on?

It's time for oil tax reform
To the editor: I read the article “New estimate projects 50% less Alaska state revenue from proposed Willow oil project” with great interest. What is the point of a tax
We need oil reform now. As Rebecca asks in this opinion piece, "What is the point of a tax structure that allows global corporations to deduct more than they pay?" Read on to learn more about how we could change this system for the benefit of all Alaskans.

Opinion: What cancellation of $1.2 billion in renewable energy infrastructure means for Alaskans
Failure to move utility-scale wind projects forward leaves Alaskans vulnerable to higher prices and volatile and expensive LNG imports.
What does the loss of federal funding for renewables mean for Alaskans? Losing out on 250 megawatts of renewable energy generation for ratepayers on the railbelt, at a time when we need all of the energy sources we can get. Read on for more info!
