Patience bolts past her Grandmother and runs up the narrow path toward the house. "Oh no." She runs inside, throwing off her coat as she flies up the stairs and down the hall. "No, NO!"

Patience clears out the stable. My father has a kind of faith. A faith in the cleverness of his friends. Faith his wagers will one day pay off. That we will be made whole again. Would that we all be so generously blessed. Patience looks down Missy's empty stall. She begins to scrub the chalk letters and drawings of stars and flowers off the stall door as she gently sings. "I return to my home At last my journey's done From far across wind swept fields In warmth from the risen sun I have been far away Beyond the horizon Yet I still heard your cry I rode at the break of dawn Through mountains high Valleys deep My true love I sought to save Now I return back home to rest here at your-" "Patience." Above hangs a portrait of a stern looking man. Below hangs a sword and beside it are an urn and two small framed etchings. "I'm..." Oswald looks intently at the painting "Oswald!" "Of course." Oswald turns to walk upstairs. "I'm on my way."

Oswald slowly walks across the parlor and sets down on a couch and broods. "..." He glances up at a painting. Two figures, male and female ride atop two horses. The horses leap together, their legs splayed outstretched in an unnatural pose as they clear a low fence. Oswald focuses on the male rider, his placid smile fixed in oil. Oswald is jarred bar to reality by his wife's voice coming from upstairs. "Oswald, I need you!"

Oswald storms up the stairs at his daughter. "But Missy-" "No! She wasn't right since losing the foal. It wasn't worth breeding her again." Oswald takes hold of his cowering daughter. "We'll have new mares. Better ones. Thoroughbreds." "but-" Oswald drags Patience down the stairs. "Enough of this! I'm the man of the house! I made a deal! A good deal! And it's turned out better than we could have hoped!" Oswald pushes his daughter out the back door. "How about a little faith in your old man? Enough with the crying!" He throws Patience's coat at her. "I need you to clear out the stable. We're about to get a new herd." "Father-" "And I need things ready for when they arrive." Patience hobbles toward the stable as Oswald retreats back into the house. "Get going! We've got to prepare!"

"Says you!" "That's, yes. That's right!" "Oswald! Even if- They're sight unseen!" "Look! We're starting over! This is a fortunate thing! Jacques- Lieutenant Pferdearshe came on behalf of his Uncle to help us out. And now a very important man owes us, rally owes us. This is a clean slate. In fact, things couldn't have worked out better! And all it cost us was a few sick animals and a morning's ride." Patience pipes up from the stairs, revealing her presence. "You sent Missy to the butcher?" "Patience." "I didn't get-" "Don't you start now, no!"

Oswald and his Mother continue to argue. "Look, he approved the transfer! Right there on the spot." "And our horses?" "He sent them to Robert. In town." "The butcher." "Well, yes." "And you let them?" "What was I- there are new horses coming!" "To us?" "Yes!" "Those horses will belong to the Captain, Oswald." "He'll let us." "You spoke to Captain Pferdehuf?" "Well, Pferdearshe." "The nephew. The one who just cost us our mares? "Well... Yes."

Oswald and his mother argue in the kitchen. "Mother, please. We still have Prince. Pferdearshe had said he just needed them for the day. We need the money." "I don't understand. Then how are they just gone?" "Look, Mother, the requisitions officer was coming by the port. Pferdearshe needed to get some new horses for his Uncle. So he asked me to bring ours by, well, sort of to show them off. You know the state that lot was in. Since the damp, the rot, they, they well, they weren't doing well. Jacques thought, well, if the officer saw them, well, he would think-" "He would think what a sorry lot of animals we had here." "Well, yes. And that he would be motivated to maybe send the Captain some new ones." "But why are they gone, Oswald?" "The requisitions officer, well, he looked the mares over and, well you know they weren't exactly doing well, and we spent half the morning riding them up there to the port. And when he saw the state of them, well..." Lydia buries her face in her hands. "Oh god, Oswald!"

Patience lays in bed, next to her mother. "Where do you think Missy has gone?" "Whatever your Father has gotten up to is not your concern. I'll talk to your Grandmother and we'll figure this all out." "Promise?" "Of course." Patience notices the covered plate on the nightstand. "You haven't touched your food." "Well, I had a more important task before me. Would you like a bite?" "You have to eat." "Well, why don't you join me then?" Mayweather uncovers the plate, revealing two eggs, a sausage and a fork. Patience picks up the fork and offers it to her mother." "You first" Patience's mother take a bite. "Are you feeling any better?" "Yes, you?" "Yes." A voice comes from downstairs. Patience and her Mother both turn towards it's source." "Oswald, I cannot believe you!"

Patience's mother looks at her daughter from a four poster bed. "Patience. What's happened?" Patience runs over to her mother. "Mother, it's horrible!" "I'm sure it's not so bad. Come here." For a moment at least, my faith is rewarded. "Tell you Mother what's happened."

Patience stands at the base of the stairs trying in vain to comfort herself. I try to choke out a prayer but cannot find the words. "oh no, oh no, oh no" A voice comes from above. "What's going on? Lydia? Oswald? Are you there?" Regardless, I am answered. Patience runs up the stairs, down the hall and into a bedroom. "Mother!"

Grandmother ominously descends the stairs. "Grandmother! I just came from the stable! The horses are all gone!" "They're- You stupid little girl! Did you leave the barn door open?" "It- it was- was all shut u, but the horses are all missing. Grandmother, what are we to do?" "We, I... That boy- damn him! This is the influence of those rapscallions! I know it! I just know it!" Grandmother storms out the back door leaving Patience alone in the kitchen.

Patience runs from the barn towards a round stone ruin in the pasture. She climbs atop and look out over the countryside. A few small farmhouses pepper the landscape along the narrow river. The Pasture is empty. It's far gate is closed. There may no longer be any purpose in rotating the feed. Patience runs into the kitchen. "Grandmother! The horses are gone!" Patience's Grandmother calls back from the top of the stairs "Patience, why are you back here already? And what in heaven's name are you yelling about?"

Patience swings open one of the stalls. "Hit there! ... Missy?" The stall stands empty. Patience checks the other stalls, finding them empty as well. "Franny? Hera? Oh no." Our lifeblood. Drained away. Patience runs through the barn and exits through the far door into the yellow field beyond. "No! No! No!"
