What do you make of the Immigration Bill? I’ve been a member for 24 years including 12 as a senior councillor and I think it’s a disgrace that will drive away voters to right and, twice as many, to left. Are our leaders trying to get to 0% in the polls because I can’t see political sense in it?

Sugary drink tax reduced sugar (not unproblematically given issues with artificial sweeteners) and raised revenue for child obesity measures (until Treasury scrapped that) but points the way. TfL junk food ad ban associated with reduction in child obesity. MUP reduced alcohol harms in Scotland…

Healthy Life Expectancy falling across UK - deaths of despair and illnesses of austerity. Working class communities need purpose and investment - let’s build renewable energy, electric trains/ships, efficient homes and infrastructure in our old industrial centres

These ‘solutions’ are so weak. Big Food needs strong regulation including of the kind that has massively reduced smoking - ad bans, plain packets, tax with revenue raised used to subsidise and promote healthier food and physical movement

I’ve been a Labour member for 24 years including 12 as a senior councillor supposedly on right of party. I can’t fathom this - makes no moral, economic or political sense. Voters inclined to think immigration is bad will be more likely to vote Reform and by a margin of 2/1 others will vote left

Down to 16% in polls, driving twice as many voters to parties to left than right, losing Caerphilly to Plaid and Denton to Greens. Are Labour determined to get to 0% and deprive economy of desperately need workers? No moral, economic or political sense at all

I’m privileged to have switched to 100% electric with a heat pump and EV powered by solar panels and 100% renewable tariff. Everyone should be supported to do same so our energy’s free of dictators, war and pollution

As I often do I completely agree with @london.gov.uk on this

There’s still time (before GE anyway) to say ‘world has changed with Covid, cost of living crisis, Ukraine war and Trump 2, Labour will seek to rejoin EU and supercharge a homegrown green Industrial Revolution as part of efforts to lower costs, pollution and to rebuild left behind regions’

It’s mystifying - I
Mean just stop voting your core voters in the face! It’s not like it’s even winning over the right curious, quite the opposite

The politics of the ‘island of strangers’ speech pushes voters to Reform and, twice as many, to Greens, LDs, Plaid and SNP. It makes no political sense, not to mention being immoral and economically ruinous. I’m hardly on the left of the party and I’m struggling to remain a member because of this

I think Starmer’s ‘island is strangers’ speech and the politics it represented was one of the most self destructive in UK political history - driving voters away from Labour to Reform, and twice as many, to Greens, Plaid (who won Caerphilly), SNP and Greens

In 2015 the King’s Fund called swingeing cuts to public health the ‘falsest of false economies’ - it was part of austerity that impoverished people and their services and has ended here: shorter healthy lives and more cost just as was predicted

But why are they even wearing it when their black and white can’t be confused with Villa’s claret and blue?

Apart from being inaccurate and immoral who was the ‘island of strangers’ speech/approach supposed to win over? Since then Labour have lost votes to Reform and, by a margin of two to one, Greens, Lib Dems, Plaid and SNP. Makes no political, economic or moral sense at all

Here in London I’ve told my teenagers to watch and learn from how fantastically your great citizens have peacefully stood up for each other and proper American values (they’re mother is US passport holder)

Would be a good idea to clear all this up not least because we’ll want unencumbered messaging next time…

Didn’t Starmer say immigration had turned the UK into an ‘island of strangers’ less than a year ago and followed it with loads of horribly anti immigrant policies and messaging sending voters to Reform and twice as many to parties to the left?

Remind who said immigration had turned the UK into an ‘island of strangers’

Good for you. People do tend to stick closer to others that look like themselves, worship same way, eat similar food etc but when we make an effort, as you do, we get great rewards. Society’s job is to make those meetings easier by designing and providing spaces and situations where it can happen

I’ve had privilege of working directly with people of different characteristics including Black people, Muslims, Trans people etc - invariably I find we’ve much in common and learning about differences is enriching. We need to support people to mix more in educational, work and leisure situations

That was certainly my experience growing up in mostly White British Canterbury but not at all living in Lambeth and working in Tower Hamlets. White British people need more support to integrate better with each other and beyond

Indeed - ‘island of strangers’ approach has just bled voters to Reform and, twice as many, to Greens, Lib Dems, Plaid and SNP
