I had my first 3 figure count of Balearics since I moved back to Cornwall this afternoon. Around 75-80% were very dark ‘sooty’ like ones. My new spot at PG is great for good close views of them

Always handy when birds fly over your head and land 20m away! #minimaleffort
Drowning?
A nice distraction from work as this popped up in the back garden today
A few arrivals on patch today. Nice to hear the first willow warbler of the spring too
2/3 With its emphasis on high carbon wildlife tourism, today’s Birdfair has a different focus from earlier years. BTO work has highlighted the impacts of climate change on birds, and because of our commitment to working sustainably, we no longer feel it is appropriate to take a stand at the event.

1/3 We’ve taken the difficult decision to not return to Global Birdfair as an exhibitor. While we recognise that Birdfair provides an opportunity to meet with members and volunteers, our continued investment in other ways to engage with supporters is proving to be a more effective use of resources.
Somehow you’ve found something even more boring than a GWE to talk about… 😉

Blogpost on an Eastern Yellow Wagtail type from 2015. A very interesting bird with a harsh, buzzy, rasping call & an appearance that looked really good for (plexa?) Eastern Yellow Wagtail.

Numbers fluctuate here in winter but normally a few kicking around 😀
It’s been a slow winter for white wingers so was pleased to find one on patch this morning
Great to see so many patches already signed up for #pwc2025. If you haven't already, it's not too late to add your patch and join the fun!
We hope that you enjoy our BirdGuides article to help you get started:
Patchwork Challenge 2025
Charlotte Foote and Jacob Spinks introduce this year's local birding competition:
I’d recommend this, fully waterproof, battery lasts weeks and cheaper www.nhbs.com/1?slug=passi...
So you mentioned 3 taiga’s in your post but posted a pic of 3 pinks and you mentioned a casp gull in you post but posted a pic of gbbg? It’s all a bit confusing…
Mass feeding frenzy off PZ, 1000s of gulls and gannets along with Risso’s, common dolphin and humpback whale. Glauc and kumlien’s the best birds so far
I found a OBP in 2015… I’ll dig out the rest 😉
Decent start to the year on patch despite the high winds and rain, sooty, Balearic, Manx shears and bonxie the seawatching highlights and a flyover glossy ibis and Slav grebe later in the day
Two spp of shearwater so far to start the year off. Hundreds of kittiwakes, auks and gannets moving too
It’s that time of year when we dream of encountering magical birds like bluetails & OBPs. Here’s a post to give some hope & to inspire people to keep searching. Dreams came true for Ryan & me. Lighting struck twice - on the same day!

Thousands of hirundines moving east over the sea and house this evening, an amazing spectacle!
Pre breakfast helping of large shears to start the day
First decent vismig session of the autumn on patch this morning with waders, pipits and larks dominating proceedings. The sunrise wasn’t too bad either
If anyone on #ukbirding wants to sign up for Patchwork Challenge in 2024, here’s the sign-up sheet. Hopefully, @ryan79.bsky.social @fatpaulscholes.bsky.social and @ornid.bsky.social will have a PWC presence on this site at some point👍😁
