I hope your weekend brings as much enthusiasm and clarity as Dr. Grubbs giving a keynote.

I may be tired and a little hoarse, but as I said again and again on the Senate floor, this is a moment where we cannot afford to be silent, when we must speak up.

You know who did read the grants that are being terminated? At least three experts in the field from around the country read them really carefully, and they and a whole panel of dozens of scientists rated them among the top 10% of applications.
Apparently we're funding based on word searches now.

So let me get this straight—Trump’s nat sec adviser added a JOURNALIST to a group chat on classified Yemen strike plans?? This isn’t a group project, it’s national security.
They screamed “Lock her up” over emails, but leaking war plans is cool now? Make it make sense.

OSU banned departments from considering race in admissions two years ago -- we aren't allowed to know applicants' races, and diversity (of any kind) was removed from all rubrics. So to come after us now shows how useless & futile it is to comply.

Hundreds of research grants at Columbia canceled following Trump edict, administrator says
The National Institutes of Health is terminating 232 grants for scientific research at Columbia University Irving Medical Center, according to an email an administrator sent to faculty.
I received one of the 232 NIH grant "terminations" sent to scientists at Columbia last night. My research focuses on improving maternal and child health in the US. Also affected: ongoing clinical trials, research training programs, and research centers that aim to improve the health of Americans.

Get ready for some world-class gaslighting tonight, as Donald Trump tries to paint a rosy portrait of the cost increases, corruption increases, and chaos of his first two months.

VA Research Funding Slashed
Though not as prominent as the NIH, VA researchers play a major role in advancing basic health science. Hundreds of projects have been cut.
NIH cuts are getting the press, but VA research is getting slashed too. What do we lose when VA research goes away? Here's some greatest hits: The nicotine patch, invention of the cardiac pacemaker, first successful liver transplant, development of the CAT/CT scan

It may not be cool or hip in some circles, but we legitimately do need a massive amount of people to run for office.
Flood the school boards, councils, county seats, state legislatures, Congress, etc.
Big changes at the top happen when the ground shifts at the bottom. And that can start now.

1/ I am seeing a lot of comments on the slashing of NIH support along the lines of “universities should just spend their huge endowments.”
I’m the last person to cheer on the institutional stratification rising endowments have contributed to. But let me explain why this is not a solution.

These are the examples the administration will use to justify their actions. Don't let them get away with it. Talk to your skeptical friends and family. Increase understanding of the system. Preach the benefits to individuals AND society. Continue to #standupforscience 6/6

A lot of damage has been done already. Science is not politics. When a researcher gets a grant, they actually have to do exactly what they said they would do, in the way they said they would do it. There is always a study that the average person will read and say "no duh who funded this??" 5/6

Terminating positions, dismantling leadership of divisions, gutting indirects, and canceling study sections and funding opportunities will discourage promising scientists from pursuing a US research career, stifle innovation, and, ultimately, increase mortality from diseases such as cancer. 4/6

But it isn't just a singular trial that is important. Trainees, fellows, and early career researchers worked on, were inspired by, and IMPORTANTLY were mentored by the individuals funded by NIH and other institutions being dismantled by the current administration. 3/6

I firmly believe that the discovery of these drugs through public funding and really smart people saved my life. I now have the chance to see kids grow up. The development of this (and many other) life saving drugs is made possible through biomedical research here in the USA. 2/6

I'm #standingupforscience because when I was diagnosed with stage 3 melanoma in 2018, I was terrified. The survival statistics for my type of melanoma was around 20%. But these statistics did not include the lives saved from the recent NCI and CRI funded studies of immunotherapy drugs. 1/6
