My husband had a cat that tolerated me. Whenever he returned from travel we couldn’t talk until the cat finished angry meowing at him about all the ways I had been insufficient. Worst performance reviews ever and I didn’t even know the details.

I enjoy the ritual of turning off individual lamps before bed while the dog and the cat wait patiently for their good night treats.

The cat laid on me when I got into bed last night, his little purr motor head tucked under my chin, and when I would stop petting him he would thrash his tail until I started again.

We moved when I was 3 and one of my earliest recallable fears was that we would have to move again when my dad grew too tall because I didn’t know people stopped growing.

I would buy cans of air from Tucson after everything has bloomed and the air smells sweet.

I think the best bet here is encouraging people to 1) break up their concrete for more permeable ground cover if they can 2) plant as many native plants as they can fit on their property 3) Leaving dead wood around 4) not, under any circumstances, spraying broad-spectrum pesticides on their yard.

A great way to support native bees and pollinators is by planting native plants. No yard? Try pots/planters! Even California natives (which can be picky about water) can work well!! I’m particularly fond of native geophytes paired with native succulents or other perennial for year-round color. 🌼
