ah yeah? Thanks! I really love some of Iron & Wine's earlier albums (esp. Shepherd's Dog) but I'd lost track over the last few years

aw, thanks! Enjoying this very much, I have to say
Now listening (out yesterday):
Bonnie Prince Billy - We Are Together Again

Must be a relief to finally complete it. Mine took 5 years and I never really wanted to see it ever again after that!
Offside is also in the collection, as is It Was Just an Accident. Will be watching them and others over the next couple of weeks π
Some of the absolute best crime neo-noirs in the last decade have come out of China - Black Coal Thin Ice, Ash is Purest White, and few others I have to see - and Only the River Flows is in the same style and of high quality.
Compared to some of Panahi's films, this is openly polemical, but no less thought-provoking than his more coded work. Perhaps unsurprisingly, it was banned in Iran. Nerve-wracking! 3/3
Although the characters are mostly strangers, they are brought into contact via the systems of oppression that confront Iranian women. While much of the abuse they face is pushed to the background, the stakes feel palpably high throughout, as the women desperately seek help, refuge and escape. 2/3
The poster for Jafar Panahi's The Circle (2000)
First watch: The Circle (2000). Still working through Mubi's Jafar Panahi collection in chronological order and this is a belter. The film follows with great urgency a series of women in Tehran whose lives briefly intersect, finally coming full circle, back to the character in the first scene. 1/3
Thank you π
Many thanks to @andrewmale.bsky.social for his immensely generous @sightsoundmag.bsky.social review of Magic Rays of Light: The Early Years of British Television; forgive me if I quote some phrases, but first here's the link to the Bloomsbury page for the book:

I feel just like that monkey! π
I know! Filthy creatures π
I had a childhood friend whose grandparents lived in the countryside nearby (can't remember where exactly now). I do remember British soldiers in watchtowers, which left quite an impression
John Self novelizations of screenplays βThe Hired Handβ & βNight Movesβ
βIn 1965, soon after the novelist Beryl Bainbridge had given birth to their new daughter, her husband Alan Sharp went downstairs to get a book out of the car. He never came back.β β @john-self.bsky.social βNight Movesβ screenwriter & novelist was subject of Bainnbridgeβs 1970s novel βSweet Williamβ
My kids have been coughing over me all week and I've finally succumbed to the lurgies. Good excuse to stay in bed and read though π€§π
I'd love that. Will have to plan a trip. I've not been to Belfast since c.1991!
Poster for Lust for Gold. The title is in big gold letters set against a mountainous backdrop. The names of stars Glenn Ford and Ida Lupino in the sky above. Small unrecognisable human figures on the ground below
Lust for Gold (1949). Preposterously plotted, bizarrely constructed western, with some truly bad acting and terrible lines: βI shook off the shroud of fear the rattler had thrown over me.β But thereβs a fun sort of oddball quality about it in a WTF is going on now kind of way
TIL Harrison Ford and Agnes Varda were both close to Jim Morrison (he was a Doors roadie, she may have been 1 of 4 people at JM's funeral) and she interviewed Ford in her World of Jacques Demy documentary, presumably bc he'd almost starred in a Demy film in LA.
Wow!
Back at the ANNA ANCHER: PAINTING LIGHT exhibition today for another look before it closes on 8th March. Very highly recommended if you can get to Dulwich Picture Gallery! #Art #ArtSky #AnnaAncher #London
Congratulations!
Oh wow, what a treat
Thanks again for putting me on to this podcast!
My wife @mariephillips.bsky.social is watching Gray's Anatomy next door and someone just shouted "I got pressure on the defect!" if anyone is looking for a line to sample in their next trap, jerk, cloud rap, or drill track.
This is really good on Barbara Loden's Wanda, with @fatscoleman.bsky.social
Made me want to rewatch the film!

a double dose of Jafar Panahi, a Colson Whitehead adaptation, and a Kevin Costner western
Right! It doesn't get mentioned so much now but was a huge deal at the time. It'll be interesting to think about why that might be
