Fantastic book. Between that and Alan's War somehow First Second stumbled into publishing translations of two of the best French comics of that time-period. They even did a nice job on the production

Wanted to show an example of what I mean WRT the lettering in Faune but I deleted the scans off my phone & they're no longer available on Anna's Archive... Basically he arranges the text for semantic and rhythmic purposes, as if it were a poem. Mid-sentence line-breaks! Varying justification!

A letter of Aristophane's to Dominique Hรฉrody. Absoluely mental handwriting I love it

Truly a phenomenal book. If I had to bet on NYRC picking up a book of his, it'd be that one. I'd hope they'd get Dean Sudarsky on it as well, because Aristophane does some really interesting things with how he arranges text in the caption boxes.

Conte and Faune were the main ones he thought were blasphemous, & I believe all the original art was burned by Aristophane himself. No Max Brod. It is curious, then, that Frรฉmok were able to reprint Faune & that they were supposedly working on a collection of his work. Maybe they have the rights?

Hopefully one day! Much of it can't even be reprinted in the French because he disavowed a lot of it as 'evil' after being seduced by a religious sect (as Menu described it). I emailed L'Asso about reprinting Comte Dรฉmoniaque and they said the estate forbade them from ever reprinting it

Absolutely gorgeous panel. Really impressive sense of scale considering how thick the brush he's using is

This book, Hors la Boxe, is the last book I needed to be able to write a long article for the blog on Philippe de Pierpont. This is a book about Boxing, it features writings by Philippe de Pierpont, interviews with boxers, and comics drawn by Jacques Faton

There's an almost English sensibility to the ink work and use of negative space here, reminiscent of Steve Yeowell or Nabiel Kanan

Logorrhรฉe is Aristophane's earliest work. I had resigned myself to never finding a print copy of this before I found out Le Lรฉzard were selling copies on their site. It looks magnificent

Page from Les Sept Fantรดmes, which was serialised in Le Lรฉzard magazine in the '90s. I've been on the lookout for the individual issues but they're very difficult to find, so I was delighted that they'd collected the Aristophane stuff.

I'm a bit embarrassed I found out Le Lรฉzard had put out a new archival collection of Aristophane's work so late. Le Lรฉzard don't ship to Ireland so I had to use a forwarding service (boxship.fr) for all the books above. The fees and shipping came out to โ‚ฌ26, so I probably paid โ‚ฌ60-70 total

Ah alright. Was sorta hoping for an untranslated book like Sophie but if this is a success it might open the door for more in the future.

Seems like NYRC are gonna publish something of Muรฑoz and Sampayo's in the future. Don't recognise the panel off-rip tho. Doesn't look like Sinner to me (plus NYRC don't do series) and I don't recognise it from Sudor Sudaca or L'Europe en Flammes. Maybe it's a Joe's Bar reissue?

Most book scanners look like this and I very much do not want that clunky behemoth in my home. Also doesn't look like it would work well at all.

Itโ€™s just a joke dude. It doesnโ€™t mean anything. Information has no coherent structure . Ideas donโ€™t touch reality

An Akira tribute by Alex Toth.
The shadow of a young figure, raising their hands alongside twin explosions.

An Akira tribute by Alex Toth. The shadow of a young figure, raising their hands alongside twin explosions.

Of the many artist tributes out there, I think about this Akira piece by Alex Toth often.
Otomo feels like someone who is the exact antithesis of Toths philosophy; pure hyper-maximimalism over stripped-down gestural brevity.
I can't help but wonder what Toth thought of Akira.

Does anyone know of any specialist book scanners available for cheaper than this? This is the only one I've found but 400 is pretty steep

Theres about a week to go on this auction at Heritage. Seeing it available again 34 years after I drew it triggered a very rare moment as I found myself bidding on something that I drew, not to drive up the price, but because I would like to own it again. It just makes me smile! tinyurl.com/mud5nwc4

Inputing the address into archive.li works for most sites. Doesn't work for sites hosted on substack or wordpress or The Paris Review for some reason
