McLoyd on SRCD Member Rümeysa Öztürk’s Detainment by Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) The United States (U.S.) has proudly built an international reputation for upholding fundamental freedoms, including speech, press, and religion—principles that are not only protected by the U.S. Constitution but are also essential to a strong and thriving democracy. Academic freedom, derived from these core liberties, is a fundamental pillar of higher education in the U.S. The Society for Research in Child Development (SRCD) is deeply concerned when these principles are violated, as in the recent detention of SRCD member Rümeysa Öztürk, a Fulbright scholar and doctoral student at Tufts University. Öztürk held an F-1 student visa, which allows international students to pursue education in the U.S. Öztürk, like many members of SRCD and other scientific societies, legally migrated to the U.S. with the intention of experiencing the freedom to explore, express, and contribute to the scientific community. As a doctoral student in child and human development, Öztürk is one of many emerging scholars poised to make crucial contributions to research, ultimately helping to ensure that children and families thrive.1 Research consistently demonstrates the significant contributions of international students to the U.S. economy and the advancement of the scientific enterprise.2,3 SRCD stands with science and the scientific workforce, ensuring that our members have the freedom and opportunity to engage with their peers, challenge prevailing ideas, and contribute to the advancement of knowledge.
