🚨 My lab is hiring at all levels!

Interested in animal origins & evolutionary cell biology?

I'm recruiting a postdoc, PhD students & a research assistant to study the molecular evolution of cell adhesion using marine invertebrates + comparative genomics.

This is absolutely disgusting and against the will of the people and of the state. We do not want forever dictators that rule as monarchs.

We must fight the current Trump regime in any capacity possible. The will of the people will always win against authoritarianism.

I have work to do but I'm distracted by watching US scientific progress & leadership being irreversibly undermined because a few unelected malcontents are penalizing researchers for following legal requirements set out by congressional orders to augment basic research with benefits to society.

Eating too much cake is the sin of gluttony. However, eating too much pie is okay because the sin of pi is always zero.

What would Plato say about systems biology? In his Allegory of the Cave, prisoners can only see shadows on a wall and so they have a distorted reality. Also our measurements of genes, RNAs, proteins & metabolites are the shadows, not the reality of the complex biological systems.

The "bluesky is an echo chamber" think pieces that keep popping up really tickle me because they show how certain people genuinely believe social media should be for debating and arguing and not talking about the things that make you happy and sharing art with the world.

Oh wow! Fascinating. Interesting relationship the beetles have formed with the termites.

A macro photo taken at night of a green-glowing, bioluminescent click beetle larva, partially outside its burrow in a red-dirt termite mound. The beetle larva has sharp, wide open mandibles, ready to snap shut on any insect that ventures too close, attracted by the light.

A photo at night of a tall termite mound on a grassland. The cloudy sky is faintly blue in the background. The termite mound is dotted with a few dozen green pinpoints of light, all from tiny bioluminescent click beetle larvae living in the mound's surface, giving the termite mound the appearance of lumpy, red-dirt Christmas tree.

An amazing sight from my recent Brazil trip: bioluminescent termite mounds in Emas National Park. Tiny larvae of click beetles (Pyrearinus termitilluminans) glow steadily, hoping to attract flying insects (like winged termites & ants), which they then grab with their sharp mandibles. #insects πŸ™πŸŒΏ
