Coriolis effects on wind turbine wakes across neutral atmospheric boundary layer regimes - Volume 1008
New paper in JFM!
Wind turbines are reaching extreme sizes, with blades longer than football fields. Earthβs rotation affects wakes, impacting wind farm design/control. Coriolis effects yield wake deflections equivalent to ~20 degrees of yaw (wake steering).

While current renewable energy tax incentives in the U.S. reward total energy production β our results suggest that wind and solar complementarity and alignment with power demand can lead to a more cost-effective energy system design.

We design minimum-cost decarbonized energy systems in three regions (ISO-NE, CAISO, ERCOT). Using downscaled meteorological data at km-scale yields lower cost compared with typical meteorological data at resolutions over 30 km (i.e. reanalysis).

Decarbonized energy system planning with high-resolution spatial representation of renewables lowers cost
Decarbonized energy systems will heavily rely on wind, solar, and storage to satisfy time-varying energy demand, yet optimal siting of variable renewaβ¦
What resolution weather modeling do we need to guide renewables planning? How can we coordinate wind and solar siting to maximally benefit the grid?
Our new cover article in Cell Reports Sustainability answers these questions, led by Liying Qiu!
