VE Day live: ceremonies to take place across UK and Europe to mark 80th anniversary of Victory in Europe
Thank you everyone who has shared this, donated, expressed support. I should start getting lists of donors to the University of Oklahoma fund next week; I promise I'll reach out individually to everyone. Also will talk to St. Shenouda Society more next week. TY so much! And it's not too late :)
Changes to a National Park Service website that removed any mention of Harriet Tubman from a text about the Underground Railroad were “made without approval from NPS leadership.”

#AAR #Advocacy | We learned this morning (April 3) that DOGE has begun terminating previously awarded NEH grants. If you have been or might be affected, we've put together resources from the National Humanities Alliance (NHA) to help: aarweb.org/news/take-ac...
My NEH colleagues just heard from DOGE - demanding a 70% reduction in staff. Just obliterating federal funding for the humanities with no ready sources replacing.
Parallel map for NEH funding to states. NB that 40% of NEH funding goes directly to the state humanities councils, which do critical community work and which benefits people --culturally and economically-- all across the country. www.neh.gov/impact/states
The OAH strongly endorses the National Humanities Alliance’s statement opposing the proposed cuts to the NEH. These cuts threaten critical funding for historical research, education, and public programs that connect communities to their past.

Among the grants canceled was one helping fund a documentary about the Underground Railroad in southern Ohio. Defunding NEH is a devastating blow to local history societies, museums, colleges, and universities. Our cultural heritage is being sacrificed to provide tax cuts for American oligarchs.
The situation @nehgov.bsky.social continues to deteriorate, and the worst part is we still don’t know the full extent of the funding cuts…

DOGE has terminated all four of the American Musicological Society’s National Endowment for the Humanities (NEH) grants. These grants fund programs such as “Many Musics of America” and “Music of the United States of America.” Literally defunding the study of American music….for what reason?
Many NEH staff (including me) are waking up this morning to notices that they have been put on admin leave. If you email NEH today and don’t get an answer, that is why.
If you/your grant admin receive/received an official looking email last night or today from NEH (letterhead, correct names), make sure you check the domain it was sent from. Official emails from NEH go through eGMS Reach and would have neh.gov as the domain.
Check in with your grant admin today.
Et voilà: our NEH grant with Harriet Murav for “In the Shadow of the Holocaust: Short Fiction by Jewish Writers from the Soviet Union” has been terminated. This project does not, the letter notes, support “the furtherance of the President’s agenda.” I guess work on Jews surviving genocide is out of step with the agenda of this presidential administration whose only use for Jews is the weaponization of Jewish safety to destroy higher education.
My @nehgov.bsky.social grant “In the Shadow of the Holocaust: Short Fiction by Jewish Writers from the Soviet Union” was canceled by “DOGE.” The project doesn’t support "the furtherance of the President's agenda.” Jews surviving genocide: out of step w/ the agenda of using Jews to destroy higher ed.
Cancelled or discontinued NEH grants • community and cultural resilience • awards for faculty at TCUs • awards for faculty at HSls • humanities initiatives at HSls • humanities initiatives at TCUs • digital projects for the public • humanities connections • summer stipends • climate smart humanities organizations • spotlight on humanities initiatives higher ed
If you, like me, are looking for firm details on what’s happened so far at NEH, here’s a list of programs that are marked as discontinued or cancelled on the website. This is a snapshot - I’m sure this the impacts will grow as more cuts unfold throughout the day. #NEH #DigitalHumanities
DOGE has terminated all four of the NEH grants for the American Musicological Society. Our executive director writes:
“As the chief operating officer for the American Musicological Society, a 91-year-old knowledge society committed to the study of music, history, and culture, I am resolved.” 1/2
Just found out that a tour of Harpers Ferry, Antietam, and Gettysburg, that I was supposed to co-lead in June for a group of veterans from Rhode Island, will likely not take place owing to the organization's NEH Grant having been cancelled. I am furious. Our veterans deserve so much better.
Elon Musk and the DOGE dullards have terminated funding to the New Jersey Council for the Humanities. This will hurt all New Jerseyans.
This action is lawless. DOGE is openly violating statutes that require such councils.
How can you help? See here: njhumanities.org/neh-is-being...
NEH cancels payments on hundreds of grants already awarded and promised through 2025. This is so petty of them and so devastating. Not sure what kind of action there will be
There goes my NEH summer stipend…

The @humanitiesall.bsky.social has a resource, NEH for All, w data about the impact of the NEH locally and nationally. Yes, it is important to right now use the contact and advocacy resources, but it's also critical, imho, to read, gather, & share this info w family &community. www.nehforall.org
Very sorry. Lost my NEH fellowship today as well.
“The termination of your grant represents an urgent priority for this administration”
My NEH grant has been terminated
Incredible when the funding for your book about the educational culture wars is cut as a result of the educational culture wars
You can’t say history isn’t relevant
PSA: NEH awardees should always feel free to email chairsoffice@neh.gov with questions, feedback, or concerns. You can also message staff and access (NEH-generated) files in eGMS Reach reach.neh.gov. Any of this correspondence is subject to FOIA.
I spent the last five years serving public history, arts, and culture at NEH. Please take a moment to let your representatives know you support NEH. Or read on and I can tell you a little bit about why I believe in public funding for the humanities.
Dear NEH Grantee,This letter provides notice that the National Endowment for the Humanities (NEH) is terminating your federal grant (Grant Application No. HB30233525) effective April 3, 2025, in accordance with the termination clause in your Grant Agreement.Your grant no longer effectuates the agency’s needs and priorities and conditions of the Grant Agreement and is subject to termination due to several reasonable causes, as outlined in 2CFR§200.340.For instance, NEH has reasonable cause to terminate your grant in light of the fact that the NEH is repurposing its funding allocations in a new direction in furtherance of the President’s agenda.
And there it is. NEH Faculty Award canceled, along with $30,000 of my salary this year. Guess I'll have to ask for my teaching load back for the fall.
Seems like the NEH is being at once gutted and Trumpified. Sigh.
As we all know, NEH funding was already almost inexpressibly meager. It bears repeating that they’ve targeted NEH and IMLS exactly because they’ve been *incredibly* efficient at spurring new thought, writing, and community-building.
