Michael Dickson's performance puts him in an elite tier of Super Bowl punters
The thread we needed today
Dickson had punts downed at the 2, 4, and 6. He allowed 4 total return yards on 7 punts. Only one of his punts was returnable. Legendary stuff
Michael Dickson's performance tops Johnny Hekker's losing effort in the 13-3 punt bowl of 2018. We're comfortable calling it the new greatest punting performance in a Super Bowl. (He should have won MVP)
If we look at more recent Super Bowls only, Dickson still doesn't win the crown for highest pEPA/p. That honor goes to Eagles' punter Braden Mann in last year's Super Bowl (.28 on 2 punts). Still, Dickson's night was much more impressive than Mann's given the higher volume.
So if we're calibrating for history, Dickson (.27 pEPA per punt on 7 punts) loses out to Miller (.46 pEPA per punt on 7 punts). He also loses out to Steve Weatherford (NYG 2011) (.29 pEPA/p on 4 punts).
That said, look at basic Net Yards, Dickson clears both (47 vs 42 vs 35)
Our custom punter EPA metric includes an adjustment for era. Punters in 2025 are so much better than punters of the past that it's silly to compare their raw numbers
Dickson had an awesome night, but in 2004, Patriots punter Josh Miller punted even better than his contemporaries
Michael Dickson had the greatest punting performance in a Super Bowl of all time!
But it depends how you count π§΅
It will all come down to Michael Dickson
MICHAEL DICKSON WEAPON!!!
Honestly they should have punted and played for the safety

Baringer struggling so far

Ethan Evans 20th
Michael Dickson was snubbed
Even when controlling for the effects of field position from the dynamic kickoff, punters have been quite a bit worse this year than in the past few years.
Is it weather? something else?
Week 15 Punter Rankings
Ryan Wright jumps into the first spot after a strong week.
Weird punting season overall.
The dynamic kickoff has messed up field position.
Decreased opportunities for open field punts+increased value of pin deep punts may end up changing our priors

YALE STORMS THE FOELD
YOUβRE NOT GONNA KEEP THEM OUT OF THE YALE BOWL TONIGHT!!!
Ethan Evans 100% won the rams that game
Game is too good to have a fully fleshed take on this atm, but in the era of dynamic kickoffs and long FG range, the late game pin deep punt has become a super valuable play
Week 10 punter rankings:
-Rigo remains on top
-Bailey, Stout, and Evans having impressive seasons
-Braden Mann has dropped off in a big way since his impressive start to the season
