Our institutions are so cowed, our public is so infatuated with the notion that you can invent your own truth, that no one feels they can simply be the arbiter of what is true and real, trusting the evidence of their eyes and ears. Truth is treated as a social agreement, a compromise position.

dems have done a terrible job highlighting human stories. the right is shameless with their propaganda, they bring one grieving mom on the screen while saying every immigrant is a rapist murderer

the moral cost of what we are doing is unquantifiable
these measures are not leading to any meaningful economic savings. housing someone at gitmo has a per detainee cost of abt 1mil a year iirc. cecot is probably cheaper but this is lucrative for el salvador. we are a revenue stream!! plus transport, legal costs (increasing!) & more
all of these measures to increase “american security” actually diminish it by the way. we’ve lost all moral high ground on humane treatment of detainees, prisoners. this will have cascading effects with how americans overseas are treated. (same goes for use of torture)
sending people to gitmo comes out sounding like the much more sensible idea compared to everything at cecot bc even tho it’s arcane military bureaucracies it’s still us controlled. this is so grim to even contemplate. gitmo a blueprint for indefinite detention no trial.
