Oona defended her thesis splendidly today. Interesting discussion about palsas with the opponent Stefan Fronzek. Congrats Oona! @geobiodiv.bsky.social @unioulu.bsky.social

and who has some specific skill, bringing added value ("diversity" as you wrote) to the group. So if I retire some day, I am the dumbest person in the group without any specific skills -except the ability to hire smart folk π
should you develop your different skills equally good or focus on your best ones? I would probably go for the latter (of course, if you suck in writing, it is good to become "ok writer"). This also relates to recruiting new people. When I am recruiting, I always try to find smarter people than I am
you do not need to know everything by yourself as different skills come together through collaboration. Of course, you need to have some skills that you can offer to others so it makes sense to develop your best skills further. I guess this relates to the question that
These were good thoughts for ECRs, thanks. I will pass them on in our group. I would emphasise working with good people over most others, as our line of work is mentally challenging anyhow so it makes no sense to burden yourself more with toxic collaborators. I would add to your list that
Great opportunity to join a Finnish research organization, also our group in the university of Oulu π

I received a heartbreaking email today: A paper in a special issue Iβm editing is being retracted because one of its authors is afraid of losing their job and their legal status in the U.S. if they publish a scientific study on evolution. Yes, on evolution, nature's engine of diversity.
Minusta Suomessa jengi tekee ihan samaa, ettΓ€ tΓ€mΓ€ on jotenkin "ihmismΓ€istΓ€" toimintaa. Toivotaan jotain, mutta ei ajatella sen tarkemmin. EhkΓ€ tΓ€ssΓ€ itsekkyys on kaiken takana...
